Judge orders 2017 MLB letter to Yankees unsealed; plaintiffs say it details sign stealing

“Plaintiffs alleged that the 2017 Press Release falsely suggested that the investigation found that the Yankees had only engaged in a minor technical infraction, whereas, according to plaintiffs, the investigation had in fact found that the Yankees engaged in a more serious, sign-stealing scheme,” Rakoff wrote Friday.

Rakoff wrote that “much of the letter’s contents have already been revealed in the 2017 Press Release.” But the plaintiffs claim the letter is revelatory, arguing it “proved Manfred’s duplicity.” Both MLB and the Yankees are seeking to keep the letter under wraps.

Schiller said that the conduct the Yankees were cited for occurred in 2015 and 2016. MLB significantly updated its rules regarding electronic sign-stealing after the 2017 season.

Arm band? What is this, middle school softball?

Or the major leagues where catchers wear them all the time.

We can joke about it now but the Cubs have been at the forefront of this spin rate revolution haven't they?

Has it mostly been the Cubs finding guys that have always had high spin rates and maximizing it, or have they had pitchers that randomly have spikes in spin rate overnight?

I think it's mostly the former. We did have several prospects like Justin Steele turn into spin rate monsters over the last year or so, and so we should all brace ourselves for one of them getting caught up by this. But I don't think any of the vet pitchers are guys we have to worry about except for maybe Kimbrel.

Maples was a big spin rate improver. As a marginal guy, I’m guessing he keeps using til he gets popped.

Somewhat long thread pointing out all the non-Astros cheating that was going around. He made it seem like this big revelation but none of this surprises me at all.

Spaeder is a horsefeathering clown.

Yeah most of these seem pretty flimsy. Single season home and away splits? Like come on. From a lot of reporting from a lot of legit people it seems very likely the Yankees did something real bad in 2017, but the rest of these....

Yeah, apart from stuff like not having to travel and the crowd being on your side (which is an advantage in other sports), batting last is a pretty significant strategic advantage. Home teams winning in baseball is a significant thing.
