He was already fired, but he keeps on showing up at the park. Ricketts will never turn down labor he's already paid for, as tight as things are for the Cubs budget-wise.

And I said, I don't care if they lay me off either, because I told, I told Theo that if they move my desk one more time, then, then I'm, I'm quitting, I'm going to quit. And, and I told Tom too, because they've moved my desk four times already this year, and I used to be over by the window, and I could see the squirrels, and they were merry, but then, they took our alcohol away, but I kept my red wine because I got it from Binny's, and I kept the wine glass for my red wine and it's not okay because if they take my wine then I'll set the building on fire...

Don’t discount Girardi as a possibility. If the Cubs decide to totally scapegoat Maddon and want to do a culture 180, he fits the bill.

Just out of curiosity, who do you dipshits have an mind as a replacement?

From one genius to another:

Well there was a lot of lollygagging out there tonight.

If its going to happen its going to be early enough in the season to believe that a managerial change can salvage the season. April is too early. I'm thinking late May. Lets go May 27th, the day after getting swept at home by the Reds to bring the Cubs record to 24-28.

My birthday! Hooray!

Remember when Joe was hired he was touted as the sabermetric friendly manager who was gonna do stuff by the numbers? Then he did a bunch of baffling nonsense all the time?

I truly want to see what happens if you put a 17 year old nerd who has a Fangraphs subscription in as manager

lets see what happens

Who says they can't find a better manager? I haven't liked Maddon since he almost lost the WS with his choke moves.

The Key word being almost.

Don Baylor didn't get fired until July 4th. Dusty didn't get fired, just not renewed. Granted, that was a different regime but I think the answer for Maddon would be August 1 or not at all. What's wrong with the Cubs isn't Maddon's fault so if he got fired it would be as a scapegoat for a disappointing season. Why would PTR pay someone else and Maddon to finish out a lost season when he can save a few grand by just letting Maddon play out his contract?

Yeah, I don't think the dude is getting fired even if this tiny sample size blows up into a gigantic disaster season; the FO already made things clear by pointing out that this is effectively a lame duck season if things don't go well, so they might as well just ride it out and part ways at the end of the season if they miss the playoffs (or make it and quickly exit via a short series of sad, mournful farts yet again). Firing Maddon earlier than that would be immensely awesome and satisfying (this is an objective fact, so shut up and throw your keyboard away), but I don't think for a second that they have any intention of escalating things beyond just mutually parting ways at the end of a contract with the guy who was technically manager when the Cubs finally won another WS. The only way I could see it going another way would be if he actually lives up to the Drinky Joe meme are starts calling out the players and the org publicly.

Maddon's on-field moves have been fine to me, there's stuff that I would do different but by and large the logic is sound and I can't in good conscience think there's a big difference in Awesome Mystery Manager X than Maddon in that department. I have Maddon fatigue in listening to him talk because he's a good and comfortable public speaker and so he ends up saying nonsensical things or saying too much that annoys me. That's ultimately more aesthetic than a strategic flaw, unless you've reached the point where the Maddon-led clubhouse also has fatigue, in which case I'm picking the players over him. The coaching carousel around him is a small indicator in that regard, as well as the underperformance/regression of the core as a whole.

When is the last scheduled game, September 29th? OK then Ill go with September 30.

To be pedantic, at that point his contract simply wouldn't be renewed and it wouldn't be a firing.

already taken, you need to up your bid

Damn it. Well I guess there will be rain outs and rescheduled games, so Ill pick Sept. 31st or 32nd.

So the Great Communicator didn't communicate this news to Carl before the regular season. 'K.

Or he did and Carl just said "horsefeathers it, Imma do it anyway."

If I can be a blind homer for a second it is absolute garbage that the league is so concerned about Edwards' delivery because all it takes to be legal is a barely perceptible bit of movement at the pause, whether it's his arms or whatever. And it's with the bases empty too.
