He deserves it but kind of funny that a closer is the first one to get 100% of the vote.

Also surprised some dope didn’t leave him off.

I was sure no one was ever going to get 100% just because some jackass would turn in a blank ballot or something.

No blank ballots, but Dan Shaughnessy submitted a one name ballot.

The first unanimous HOFer has the 52nd best WAR for a pitcher in the HOF

And is no contest the best closer in MLB history. There are discussions about who the best player was at each MLB position throughout history. Not so for closer.

Sure I’m not saying he doesn’t deserve to be in. Just think it’s funny that he was the first unanimous one and not one of the 100+ players who accumulated more value over their careers

Not that I necessarily disagree but WAR is kind of a shitty metric for RP’s. Who really cares though, the HOF is a joke run and overseen by sanctimonious assholes

Yes, WAR is not a very good stat to show relative value of relievers.

As for what WAR is good at showing value of...

career WAR, 2019 HOF ballot:

1. 1st half of Bonds' career: 83.6

2. Mussina: 83.0

3. Schilling: 79.6

4. 2nd half of Bonds: 79.2

5. 1st half of Clemens: 73.3

6. Walker: 72.7

7. Rolen 70.2

8. Manny: 69.4

9. Edgar: 68.4

10. 2nd half of Clemens: 65.7

11. Halladay: 64.3

i think the bigger problem is that people refused to vote for guys like ted williams, willie mays, greg maddux, stan musial, tom seaver, etc. in their first year of eligibility. those are among the best players in history at their respective positions and among the 25 or so best players of all time. like more than 5% of the voters didn't vote for willie mays!!! he was a hall of famer if he had retired halfway through his career, let alone continuing to be just about the best player in baseball for another several years. what's the argument against him, that the hall of fame should be limited to babe ruth, cy young, walter johnson and that's it?

Rivera is 5th all-time in Win Probability Added behind only Clemens, Lefty Grove, Maddux and Warren Spahn. WPA probably inflates relievers' value a bit, but still...

And anyway, Rivera could have never pitched in the regular season at all and his 0.70 ERA over 141 IP in the post-season probably would have earned him a HoF spot.

Looking at Andruw Jones' stats is always wild; is there a more dramatic example of a truly great player hitting 30 and then just completely falling off of a cliff?

Probably not at Andruw's level, but Mets fans would cite Mo Vaughn.

Mo was old and injured before he came to queens

Is Edgar the first player to be elected to the HOF based largely on his rate stats? He's nowhere near any of the counting stat milestones (although him not playing his first full season until age 27 is why he doesn't have 3000)

Heyward did it at 26

Carlos Baerga at a similar age to Heyward - not as dramatic but Heyward is buoyed by his defense...plus any free agent the Cubs signed during the 80's and early 90's.

Joe Mauer?

Howard Johnson?

This just makes me think WPA is absolute garbage.

Closer is not a position. Its like lead-off man or clean up hitter. Ricky Henderson was the best Lead off man ever without question. So I am not sure your argument is valid.

Can't wait for the first Super Utility Man to be enshrined!
