If Theo could've been 100% honest he definitely would've said, "Look, guys, I didn't want it to look this obvious that we were gaming his service time, I would've brought him up later than the exact day we secured the extra year but all my other third basemen got hurt"

Not much later... They weren't going to give Mike Olt a super long leash and some in the organization (not Theo or Jed) wanted him to break camp with the big league team. They thought it was a certainty that the Cubs and KB would eventually work out an extension so why delay it?

Not that it matters anymore, but they called up Addison Russell way too soon that year. He needed more time to improve and work on his approach in the minors. No doubt Theo rushed that in my mind.

Since I just watched Game 7 again, friendly reminder that KB scored on a sac fly to short LF and scored from first on a single in that game.

He put on an absolute base running clinic in Game 7

Love that you brought this up. That sac fly score was amazing. He probably would have been out with a lower throw but that’s the point, he caught them so off guard that a throw was rushed and he scored.

No one's ever asked him to my knowledge but I'd bet my life Jones only decided to send him when he could tell Davis wasn't planning a throw.

Obviously we know what Davis did at the plate, but man was he (and the rest of the outfield) a disaster in the field for them. You can even point to the last AB, and having by far their worst hitter at the plate because they had to bring him in for defensive purposes.

I just saw a video on YouTube that showed a bunch of star's 1st hits, and I completely forgot that KBs 1st hit was a blooper and when Rizzo tried to get to third and made it, KB used heads up baserunning to get to 2B. Sign of things to come.

Bryant's hit starts at 1:22

Seems promising:

He actually had some good quotes on a number of topics if you read Jesse’s recent feed

Translation: If they offer me a king's ransom, I'll sign an extension.

I don’t blame him for not doing an extension at this point but I also think between this mess we’re in and 2022 looking in more trouble I don’t see KB getting $200+ mil either on an extension/new FA deal (well maybe a little over $200 if it includes this/next year arb years). I’d guess he’s in the $160-190 mil range in new money on his next deal.

I actually agree, we all knew he would come crawling eventually (30 at FA) and the shutdown should help the Cubs get him at the price they always wanted. The leveragez are all Cubs - players are going to get squeezed further than ever in FA and everyone knows it, Bryant is aging, just had a baby, Cubs are richer than pretty much everyone else, etc

Yeesh.

I bet if you went out there and kicked ass like the 2016 Cubs, they’d keep everyone together*

*oh wait I forgot about PTR

My "optimistic" take on what is probably an inevitable Bryant extension is that whatever he signs for will not hurt future players anymore than they have been. The Cubs will pobably offer more than CW11's range but only because everyone is cheaper moving forward and it's good cover that proves the owners are definitely not colluding in FA maybe even years in advance if they were but they aren't

Pretty much everything is going to be a demerit for players in 2020 - whether they play during COVID or not, whether they hit or not, whether they win or not, having babies...It sucks but to stay on the optimism theme - if the players play great baseball some of the already low ground they had can be regained in time...Feels like a good time to point out: Ed Howard is the only amateur the Cubs have signed to get more than half Bryant's $6.7 million signing bonus since the Cubs stopped making top ten picks

who the horsefeathers is cw11. for christs sake
