Yeah, NFL teams have alot of outs on contracts and wouldn't be surprised if the only guys on D really locked in past 2-3 years are Mack, Smith, and Hicks. The non-rookie contracts both probably have outs in 3 years themselves.

My shot at the guys they really like for second contract Mitch: R. Smith, Miller, hopefully Ridley, Montgomery, Mack and Hicks (duh), Jackson, Whitehair, J. Daniels, Tolliver...Goldman's key to this current D's prime but as a NT already off the field for nearly half the defensive snap he will be one of the first casualties of this D probably

There's no way Jackson isn't a Bear for the next 5 years IMO

I could potentially see Bars replacing Massie after next year. It could be him or maybe Long also. I trust Pace and Hiestand to identify and develop the OL enough to believe they could replace both. Some of that money saved will be spent on Whitehair though.

Hopefully Gabriel, Miller, Ridley, Wims is enough to move on from Robinson's money then as well. Hell maybe we get lucky and they make Gabriel expendable too.

I'm also hoping Tolliver develops into a starter in place of Prince.

Extending Floyd could prove costly to that window. Hes already getting 13 next year and I know hes a solid all around player but I dont know that hes worth that price let alone an extension.

Trey Burton was a no-show for much of the 2nd half of the season and obviously the playoffs. Still a lot of uncertainty around him and he makes a decent chunk of change. Too bad Shaheen looks like a bust and not a cheap replacement.

The only guys that I think have to be folded into the Trubisky 2nd contract window are Mack, Hicks (seriously hope he retires a Bear barring catastrophic injury), Jackson, Goldman, Smith, Fuller, Whitehair. The other guys you cross the bridge when it comes. Theres gonna be some tough choices to make for sure.

Theres a lot of optimism here.

1. Trusting any brain trust to replace 2/5 of a line...

(side note, Massie's new deal prerty much ensures he's here next year). A Whitehair extension in the next week would put the line in a decent shape for 2020 though.

2. Gabriel and a couple guys with zero or near zero NFL production replacing AR? Hopefully its the young guys replacing Gabriel if anything.

3. Tolliver, was he active in amy game last year? Again that certainly requires quite a bit of hope.

4. I think you might have exceeded the cap with the guys you just listed (assuming Trubisky is worth a 2nd contract)

I said Massie would probably be replaced after next year so I'm not sure the side note was necessary. I really believe in Bars. If he hadn't had the severe injury he was probably a 3rd or 4th round pick, and Hiestand has commended him for his ability to play all across the line. So IMO, 1 replacement is already in house. Depends on if they like him inside or out. The other can be an FA addition to shave a couple mil or a draft pick. But Leno, Whitehair, Daniels is a really solid foundation to build on. Bars has played like a potential starter.

Robinson is surely not irreplaceable statistically. Hes more of a prototype or an idea as a go up and get it, wide catch radius type than he is some true number 1 IMO. Is he worth 15m? Not IMO. He has this year to prove he can still be that guy and if hes not then I really dont think hes around for 2020. That's a bad use of resources. On a per game basis, Robinson was meh. But now he has a year in the system and all that jazz so hopefully he explodes.

They spent 23 on him, Gabriel, and Burton and got pretty mediocre value back. This year it's over 30.

It's all hope. Tolliver was a blue chip prospect. He could be nothing but there's potential there. With Fuller's deal and after Mitch gets money, I don't think you can afford to pay Prince. They could go cheap in FA. Prince is easily cuttable after this season FWIW (1m dead cap).

Goldman is also easily cut after 2021. 18m cap hit is huge. The dead is 3 so they save 15 by cutting. I could see a restructure to open cap.

Mitch is obviously the key. He needs to take a big step forward this year. The Alex Smith comp is fair. You don't pay top dollar for that type. Itll be interesting to see where his demands are if he's still just decent this year.

Bars is not a tackle. He can do it in a pinch, and I'm sure Heistand can make him more than serviceable there. But he should be considered the future at whatever guard spot Whitehair is not playing.

I'm pretty amazed at how little value Trubisky is given. To me, and I get that I'm as homer as they come, he has all of the tools necessary to be successful this year. ARob was coming off a year with a bad injury. Anthony Miller played with one arm all year. Trey Burton was practically non existent. Jordan Howard couldn't be trusted by Trubisky or the coaching staff to be more than one dimensional. Every receiver except Bellamy and White were new to Trubisky. The coaching staff and offensive scheme was new last year. The OLine was being jogged around quite a bit, making it difficult for them to be more cohesive as a team.

This year, not only does Trubisky have an extra year of experience with these receivers, but he's been given even more tools to work with in Davis and Montgomery and potentially added value from Wims and Ridley. Anything from Trey Burton will be an added bonus. Watching game tape and working on his footwork and settling down the overthrows could make him a top 10 QB this year. There is basically no excuse this year for struggling. If he can't make something happen this year with this talent surrounding him, then he clearly isn't the right guy for the job and he's a placesitter until they replace him, which will be pretty sad, because this is a Super Bowl caliber team even with just decent QB play. There is only one potential fantasy stud on this offense and it's Trubisky. I just don't think there is a defense that can cover ARob, Miller, Gabriel, Burton and Montgomery/Cohen all on the field at the same time. Hopefully Trubisky is better at reading the field this year and trusting his guys to make plays. Maybe it's better that he isn't expected to be a top QB. It takes a bit of pressure off.

Ok so then it appears you agree with me that hes likely gonna be a starter on the line and that leaves only 1 spot to be replaced, likely after 2020. That's not really a long reach of hope.

Only part I disagree with here. I think Montgomery is going to wreak havoc employed in this scheme and end up as ROY.

I hope you are right, but I can totally see Nagy using Montgomery, Davis, Cohen and Patterson in the backfield to keep fresh legs in there. Montgomery will likely be the feature guy, but I'll bet his touches between carries and catches will be less than 20 a game.

Can someone provide some context to Montgomery's meh stats last year? The team won 8 games so they weren't bad, they only threw for about 3K so they weren't an air-raid offense I dont think. Montgomery had a 4.7 ypc and only 22 catches for 157 yards. I know college stats aren't everything and sometimes they can be nothing. I like his tape and some of his athletic traits. Just curious.

So umm

95% likely this is the Bears right?

This bears season is scary because the last few years have been structured for a window that was pretty much last year and this year. It gets dicey fast as you look into the future.

While I think you're mostly right the window is more like three years: last year/this year/next year. After year 4 for a young QB is generally when the honeymoon is over. If he's good that's when you have to start paying him, if he's not good that's when you can feel pretty confident he's not going to get any better. Plus on the defensive side, our team control on Jackson and Floyd runs through next year.

his comment has to do with how long an elite defense can keep a team in contention I believe. that being said, I think 3 years is pretty appropriate

It's a combination of a couple things. Impending free agents, the lack of first-round picks, the historical short longevity of elite defenses.

If they can't get it done this year, it's tough to see next year as better.

lol Piniero had an XP blocked

Edit: never mind I don’t think it was blocked, he just completely shanked it. Not good

I mean holy horsefeathers that one was waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay wide left

Does he leave the smokes in the car?

I bet he'd be a riot to watch the game with

He’s probably a big douche. But I agree that he’d probably be fun to watch a game with. Or even just drink beer and smoke with.

Nice recovery going 3-3 on the field goals, nothing crazy like the 58 yarder but still good to see. I really want to love the guy with him being cocky [expletive] nailing field goals and pumping his fists.

He scored 13 TDs on a team that scored 33...His teammate Hakeem Butler (9 TDs in 60 receptions) is a serious WR prospect too but broke his hand in preseason

I know it's college and some of these numbers need to be taken with a huge grain of salt but there were 26 backs ahead of him in TDs.
