I'm particularly enjoying the fate of the LA Kings, who tanked *hard* and had their fans really embracing it, only to drop all the way from 2nd to 5th.

The trade off is the Lakers will win the lottery and the Bulls will drop to 8th

for those that know more of the NHL draft/international hockey than me (who knows nothing), is a trade out of #3 something the Hawks should consider?

Depends on what's being offered. I don't wanna overstate by saying there's *no* difference between 3 and 8, but there's definitely 2 key guys and 5 or 6 second-tier ones. You're not giving up an irreplaceable opportunity if you trade down.

Now that I'm reading up on it, Podkolzin *can't* come over for 2 years. You can't even negotiate with him, he's full SKA property. And he could always choose to stay there rather than take an NHL ELC after those two years.

That'd give me a long pause. You could take Bynam as a potential No. 1 D (albeit it'll take a few years of developing) or there's a lot of interesting C's.

on the blackhawks hf forum (i don't know if they're smart, but they're very active), they've pretty much completely written off podkolzin as a blackhawks pick

Those guys would know better than me. That place is hardcore.

Ugh. Kane and Toews are in their 30s now. I don’t know if it’s worth waiting 2+ years to get production out of this pick

I need a team or two to bandwagon on for the playoffs. Who should I be rooting for?

No NHL thread so had to post this here.

I usually like a nice Canadian team to advance when the hawks aren’t around. But screw Toronto so why not Calgary? Otherwise, I don’t know, Carolina? Unless you want to pick the Islanders just so Rangers fans squirm.

First, root for the Lightning to either crap out spectacularly in the first round or dominate everyone and win it all. No in-between.

Then enjoy the tears whenever the Maple Leafs lose.

After that, I guess the Jets are not objectionable. Las Vegas had those hilarious pre-game shows last year, but I don't think they can get a similar run going.

I am going with the Lightning and the Jets. I just have always likes Tampa for some weird reason, more so when Yzerman was the GM. Jets are a fun team to watch in my opiniion

I know CBJ isn’t winning this series, but a 4 goal comeback on Tampa ice was really fun

You never know in hockey. In 2010, Washington looked unstoppable going into the playoffs and crapped out in 6. Those good San Jose and Detroit teams did too over the years.

As for the Cup this year, I always enjoy when St Louis exits.

They could definitely win this series.

Sure they could, but my take on Game 1 was that Tampa scorched the in the 1st period, then took their foot off the gas. I don't think they underestimate the Jackets the rest of the way.

Also, Bobrovsky has had a terrible go of it in the playoffs, and needs to play out of his mind to keep the team in this series (as the CBJ defense isn't great)

the nhl playoffs are great. an upset like this can happen at any time, but it doesn't feel as stupid and luck-dependent as it does when it happens in baseball.

the blues loss tonight made me realize that the only time the Q era hawks blew a series lead was in 2014 against the kings, and it was only a 1-0 series lead. aside from all the winning, they really kept the heartbreaks to a minimum for a team that was perennially expected to go deep in the playoffs
