team with terrible defense trades defensemen for a non-defenseman

yeah, my exact reaction too. interesting strategy to trade one of the actual young, promising defenseman (on a team that doesn't have many) for a forward.

the strome trade got this exact same reaction. I'm willing to give stand the benefit of the doubt here. this organization has a tremendous track record of identifying young talent.

What?

i don't know how you can possibly contest this. the organization has been amazing at acquiring/developing young talent over the last decade plus. it's why they were able to sustain the cup window for so long despite the insane amount of cap casualties they had over that time. it's also why we have stars like debrincat and strome, plus one of the better groups of defensive prospects in the nhl.

stan's flaws are are all about overpaying. the development of young talent has never been an issue.

if they were great at it relative to how great other teams are and developed actual stars they wouldn’t have sucked the past few years with Kane and Toews still around.

He’s great at trading away talent, he’s done that a lot.

This would be a true statement around 2011, and most of that talent was brought in by Tallon

Its almost like there's a salary cap in place that makes it difficult to keep contending once your stars get massive contracts. they were doomed because of awful contracts like bickell and seabrook, but the talent never stopped coming. they had those mediocre years right after the cap purge of 2010, then got back to dominance within 2 years by finding guys like saad, shaw, leddy, crawford, and oduya (he wasnt young, but he was a great bargain). They got tuevo late in the first round (stan deserves blame for having to dump him because of bickell, but the point is that they identified a great talent late in the first round again). Now it's guys like schmaltz (traded for a top talent that looked like a bust, only to break out immediately when coming to the hawks), debrincat (39th overall and immediately became a star). It is hard to produce meaningful talent when you're finishing at the top of the standings every year, but they kept doing it. now we've got the top top end picks in dach and bovqist on the way as they're finally picking at the top.

i think they're still good at identifying forward talent -- but what defenseman has Bowman found over the last handful of years?

that's true, but for a long time, they had such an amazing core of defensemen, that it made sense to focus more on forwards. the defense has buried them the last 2 years, but at the same time, they might not have strome and debrincat if they'd focused on defense, so they'd have sucked anyways.

they do have one of the better groups of defenseman prospects in the league with guys like boqvist, mitchell, and beaudin. I'm optimistic about the defense long term.
