everyone is calling this an awesome deal for the hawks (and people never say that about hawks moves)

Eh. it's a something for nothing trade, so sure. He really shouldn't be higher than a third pairing guy on a team that has any playoff aspirations, and right now he's probably on the second pairing (with Jokiharju, behind Keith/Murphy), neither of which inspires a ton of confidence. Seabrook remains the $8m elephant in the room. There were rumors of them trying to trade down to 10th in the draft just to dump his contract.

Sounds like this guy is fine, but at $4.5m for three more years at his age, he could be a cap liability in a hurry.

He's not that old though....just turned 28 in May. He's proven he can play consistently for a contending team, and sadly that pretty much guarantees he's one of our 6 best defensemen right now. Going into the offseason we had two guys who should/would play (Keith/Murphy), someone who should definitely play but didn't for much of last year (Joker), someone who definitely shouldn't play but did and probably will (Seabrook), and then like 6 dudes who either weren't ready yet or weren't ever going to be ready. At least with de Haan and to a lesser extent Maatta, we have NHL caliber players to fill those holes while we figure out which of the kids can step up.

28-31 is not old, and 4.5 is super cheap for a top 4 d-man. he took less to stay in carolina when he signed that contract. and no player at 4.5 million is really a cap liability now. he'd be easily movable at pretty much any point.

considering where we went in the draft and who we gave up, de Haan is an improvement over the swiss cheese defensemen we had

everybody outside of nsbb is calling this a huge steal for the hawks.

It’s hard for me to see it as anything other than a win for the blackhawks, seeing that it comes off like a trade you’d make in NHL 19 that still assigns some value to a player (Anton Forsberg) who really doesn’t have any in order to make a clear upgrade in an otherwise 1 for 1 trade.

But I don’t think I can get to ‘huge steal’ as de Haan is pretty much who you see when you google ‘replacement/serviceable d-man’, and there really isn’t any upside to hope on at this point. It’s an upgrade, but one that they were almost required to make, not one that’s going to move the needle on any playoff aspirations for me.

Yeah, I'm not seeing a "huge steal". It seems good, but nothing close to a solution for the defensive problems. He's a serviceable guy who will probably start the season on rehab. They seem to have ~5-6 2nd line defenseman now.

they gave it a "B" for the Blackhawks. FWIW

I haven't heard anybody trading a huge steal of a trade with a B grade.

Sure saying it was a steal is probably overboard, but it was a good trade Jersey

Yeah, I know. I said that. They traded away very little and got something decent. The point is this is a team with a severe lack of top defensemen, and as far as I can tell, a glut of mid-tier defensemen. They appear to have masked the weakest parts of the defense, but haven't (and probably won't be able to) significantly improved the top of the defense.

Saying it was a steal would have been overboard. Saying it was a "huge steal" earned the call out, I think.

It was a nice trade that improved the second or third line. But it did not address the need for a top-pairing defenseman, and it did not address the overload they have on the roster.

de haan is a lot better than the current blackhawk defensemen that you guys are calling middle of the pack. Do you guys remember the defense last year? I dont see how you can call adding any kind of solid defenseman redundant at this point. we need those too.

obviously he doesn't fill the need for a top pairing guy, but hes a clear upgrade over almost everyone on the roster, and he doesn't effect the pursuit of an elite defenseman. he barely makes a dent in the huge amount of cap space we have going forward (even considering strome and debrincat getting paid next offseason), and we still have arguably the best group of defensive prospects in the nhl.

we got a hjalmarasson type for scraps. I stand by my reaction.

We got a very cut rate version of Hammer for essentially nothing. Are we better now than we were before? Sure. I'd put Murphy and still Keith ahead of him, but yeah, he's instantly our third best Dman. He played third pairing most of the time last year, but Carolina had a really solid top 4, so it's not necessarily an indictment. But this is a guy who absolutely tops out as a second pairing guy. We definitely need second pairing guys. But this is picking up Howie Kendrick, not Rendon.

Hammer 2014 or Hammer 2018?

I'm kidding. I think it is a stretch to herald him as a huge steal. We got the better end of trade, we got better as a team, but a Keith 2010 would have been a huge steal. #2 is still my only BHawks jersey, I'm partial

another good trade. shaw had 47 points in 63 games last year. he's still only 27 and the contract is fine, even assuming he regresses

the hawks might already be better than the cubs again (at hockey they almost definitely are)

lehner is 28 and coming off an unbelievable year. I dont understand why he would sign a 1 year deal.

His contract matches Corey Crawford’s exactly now (1 yr 5m). I’m going to guess we hear Crawford is retiring

Edit: but I guess that doesn’t address why he only took 1 year. Really not sure there. He was offered 2/10 by the islanders
