I think "march" is more like a full on sprint. Who is the phenom we're tanking for in the draft?

American Jack Hughes appears to be the consensus top pick.http://www.espn.com/nhl/story/_/id/23864766/nhl-meet-jack-hughes-record-breaking-no-1-ranked-2019-nhl-draft-prospect

Although the top three players look to be high ceiling talents already http://www.sportingnews.com/us/nhl/news/2019-nhl-entry-draft-top-31-prospects-jack-hughes-first-overall-pick-nhl/1j5blnm704ev1sv6e865wc7m8

I know you always need a bit of luck with the lottery, but the Hawks are certainly doing their part.

Why did the Blackhawks give up on Anthony Duclair? He has been awesome for the Blue Jackets this year

They didn't want to pay him what they thought he'd get. He showed some flashes last year but was inconsistent. The Hawks have other fast guys with potential that are cheaper. I liked Duclair but he'd look really good one game and then disappear for 3-4. There's a reason why he's bounced around a bit.

Not sure what to think of this trade. It could benefit both sides, could help neither side or could be a steal for either team. Strome is a big name but looks a little like a bust considering he was a #3 overall pick and is getting traded along with another player for a guy that *might* be pretty good. Perlini is probably a depth player but those guys can add a lot of value.

The question with Schmaltz has always been whether he could play center. With the jury still out on that at least the Hawks got a guy in Strome that can.

They are a legit threat to win the draft lottery. There are supposed to be three legit elite guys, but Hughes is at least Kane level and would be huge.

If they want to win another Cup with this core, that would be the first step

15 losses in their last 18 games. Good God are they bad. Never thought I’d see a team with the Kane/Toews/Keith core look so...bad

I keep wanting to look at capfriendly and figure out who to move in a fire sale and who can stay.

1) I don't want to move Kane or Toews, even if neither of them is an ideal use of 13% of your cap.

2) The Seabrook contract is so LOLbad and even when it was being signed we knew it was LOLbad but we were signing everyone so why not?

3) I think you'll move Keith someday, but not today. In a couple of years the gap between the cap hit and the salary will make him appealing to a salary floor team.

But I think there's a path to a quick reload for one last shot in 2019-2021.

It starts with trading Crawford at the deadline and going back to the old plan of cheap goalies. Tank *hard* the rest of the way.

Then hit big in the draft lottery. Either Hughes or Kakko. Hope they can contribute immediately.

That should leave you with enough cap space to bring in three serious additions in the offseason (Panarin seems like a popular pick) and you go stars and scrubs with the roster.

You arent getting anywhere w/o a top defensive man or 3 if you go with the “cheap goalie” tactic.

Exactly...It work for the Wings when they had Lidstrom, Rafalski, young Kronwall and Stuart

It work for the Hawks when they had young Keith, young Seabrook and Hjarlmasson

Crow suffered another nasty concussion tonight. For his sake I hope he hangs it up.

At the very least he shouldn't play again this season. Hopefully he has someone in his life that can point him in the right direction.

How would an injury retirement impact the cap room?
