The quick hook in the playoffs mostly makes sense though

If you want to run your bullpen into the ground, sure.

It’s either that or guarantee a loss most nights the starter isn’t on, so yeah, you take your chances and hope the starter is better the next night.

But Maddon is a spaz and when his starter gives up 1 run on 2 hits in the 3rd inning, he goes to the pen for the final 18 outs

I hate this trend. Maddon is going to be quick-hooking pitchers left and right this post-season and it's going to drive me crazy

Key word: Playoffs

In the playoffs it’s usually perfectly fine to do. Like yeah you can’t do it every game but you can most games and do it lot more liberally than regular season.

Especially if you have 3-4 (and might add more) good relievers like us and ideally a good long guy when fully healthy (Monty).

And the Cain/Yelich combo lead off the top of the tenth with a walk and a hit. VB have 2nd and 3rd and nobody out in a tie ballgame.

And just as I post, Soon-to-be All-Star Aguillar strikes out, an IBB to Shaw and a double play by Miller.

C'mon Florida. The VBs want you to win.

No he isn’t unless it’s a rested pen and an elimation game

Uh, we're 51-36 and that's the way we've done things all year. Of course we can do it in the playoffs. Everyone does that in the playoffs. Also, we're gonna have another good relief pitcher we traded for and probably Monty in the pen during the playoffs.

His does Mattingly not understand L/R splits (didn’t bring in a LOOGY to face Shaw, bunted guys over so Hader could face lefty Dietrich)? Dusty would out-manage him.

That was awful, they’re lucky this game is still tied

Marlins turn to try to cash in a runner from 3rd with less than 2 outs

Edit: Brewers lose

The playoffs are set up to make bullpenning worth it. You only need 4 starters. More guys in the pen. Can send a starter (Monty?) to the pen. More days off between games. Pitchers are worse facing guys the third time through -- let alone facing them a couple times in a week. You can just send a constant parade of fresh, rested guys out using max effort and bringing 98 mph heat. You can play L/R. You can use your best guys against their best guys.

Starters are becoming less and less important in the playoffs. They are in the regular season, too. But even moreso in the playoffs. If the season were like 30 games long instead of 162, you'd be seeing bullpenning all the time. The setup of the playoffs is advantageous for how our roster is set up. We'll win with offense and defense and bullpenning -- just like we're doing right now. Except, we can do even more of it, and we won't be doing it with Luke Farrell.

hell of a way for the a's to lose to the astros

So if that same play happens but Lucroy did tag Bregman (so umps initially rule safe, but overturn it on replay), do the A's still lose because Lucroy threw the ball away? Or do they rule that had they gotten the call right, Lucroy never throws the ball to first and it's second and third with 2 outs?

I was wondering the same thing. I'd assume that they'd rule the play over at that point.

That’s what I was thinking. The runners were moving so you make it 2nd and 3rd with two outs.

So basically instead of getting a lefty, he got possibly the worst pitcher in the bullpen at getting lefties out to face one of the best lefties in baseball. Ouch.

That said, Votto was 0-6 lifetime against Otero and 4-13 against Perez. Perhaps its this stat that caused Carl Willis to not question the call to the pen and let Otero enter the game.
