Everything duke touches...

Look, Duke was just pointing out that Justin Grimm: decent pitcher was looking more and more like a fairy tale.

So who gets that last bullpen spot?

Morrow

Edwards

Strop

Cishek

Wilson

Montgomery

Duensing

...do the Cubs need others?

My bet would be Butler, not that he's the best option but helps with depth in case of injury.

Not unsurprising. Last spot probably goes to Butler, since he's out of options. Maybe one of Simmons or Maples if Strop has to start the year on the DL.

Best of luck to him. Carl's Jr all that's left from the Garza trade haul.

I hate that less than two years after a World Series title you cynical bastards are ready to shove any of these guys off the train and pretend there was never anything good about these players. They are human, you know.

I prefer to remember the good times and celebrate the positive.

He had a hot wife.

If they would've cut him yesterday or Tuesday they would've saved another $200k or so. Maybe just how it worked out that today was the day but think it's another example of the FO treating guys decently by making sure Grimm got a little extra.

I guess I'm mildly interested to see Butler as a reliever full time. Maybe he can consistently sit 96 mph or something. I'd assume he's pretty much locked into the last bullpen spot. My guess is if Strop is ready on opening day, we go with 8 relievers; if he's on the DL, Bourjos or Zagunis take his spot until he's ready.

Well, Edwards is the last guy standing from the M. Garza trade. First went Olt and then Ramirez and now Grimm. Kind of sucks, but I still consider it a good trade. If Edwards can develop into a shutdown late-inning reliever this trade will look even better.

I really thought N. Ramirez was going to be awesome for the Cubs after that amazing 2014 season. He had incredible stuff when healthy.

According to Sharma it looks like Anthony Bass is likely going to get the last spot in the bullpen now that Grimm is bad.

Really? Anthony Bass is the guy they take? I think I'd prefer Eddie Butler for that last spot.

I'm guessing they want Butler to stretch out in case they need a spot start. But yeah, Bass is... hmmm...

Butler is out of options. I think it should be Butler for that reason, and he's arguably the most valuable choice anyway. We're talking a bottom of the bullpen guy and someone that isn't going to be in many big situations. Butler at least gives you the ability to throw multiple innings, which can be very useful in games that are out of hand or games that go into extras. It also lets them use Montgomery however they want.

Plus, Butler still has some nice upside and maybe Hickey can work his magic there. I just feel like there's more value in keeping Butler around for at least a little bit rather than some rando like Anthony Bass, who is 30 and bad.
