An underrated part of the Arrieta story is watching him transform into god-mode Jake in 2014. We still had no idea what was going on with the rotation then. It ultimately didn't matter because we still sucked that year. But his ascension was huge in shaping the last three years for us. I still can't believe how perfectly all the pieces fit and how quickly our fortunes changed.

I agree. He was like our little secret in 2014 since the Cubs were awful. The best was that game against the Red Sox he almost threw a no-hitter. I mean the Red Sox had been battering this dude for years as a Oriole, now all the sudden he's dominating them.

2-0 in the world series!

Personally swatting down whatever that little thing was that the Pirates had going on for a couple of years.

This will be the enduring Arrieta memory for me. First playoff appearance of the Theo era, franchise on a 9 game playoff losing streak, wild card winner-take-all game on the road.

He crushed their souls so badly they threw at him just to try and get him off his rhythm. Arrieta responded by stealing second base, and then finishing the last 3 innings of the complete game shutout.

Maybe this isn't entirely true but horsefeathers it: Jake Arrieta broke the Pirates beyond repair.

Yeah the Red Sox game is what I'm always going to remember from Jake. That was his coming out party. I missed the Dodgers no hitter and the WC game I always think of Schwarber's dong first.

In 2014 - the third year of Theo - a lot of fans were starting to get antsy about the rebuild. Not me. That was when I started thinking this horsefeathers might actually work. Arrieta was a huge part of that.

When he got off the DL about 40 games into the season, the team started playing really well until the Shark/Hammel trade. They bottomed out for a few weeks until Hendricks started pitching really well and Javy came up. Had another really good stretch of baseball until Rizzo and Castro both got hurt. That 2014 team was actually pretty good during the two chunks of the season when they had an actual MLB team on the field.

Almost forgot how epic his final Cubs start was....might have lost the series but we got one last great Jake moment

was the arrieta trade the best cubs transaction of our lifetimes? taking into account the fact that they got him for close to nothing, it's crazy how much production they got out of him, and he was a very significant part of the team that finally won the world series.

It’s up there if it isn’t the best with the others mentioned here but also Bobby Hill and some guy named Matt Bruback for Kenny Lofton and Aramis Ramirez was pretty damn great. Lofton was awesome in that 2003 playoff run and Ramirez goes without saying.

I would guess that in terms of major league WAR not many trades in Cub history compare to the Aramis trade.

Rizzo for Cashner will ultimately be better I would guess.

fWAR as a Cub:

Rizzo: 23.9 (6 seasons)

Ramirez: 25.8 (8.5 seasons)

Arrieta: 16.5 (~4 seasons)

What we gave up in all 3 cases is negligible for the most part. Cashner has had the most success but he's been on several teams since the Cubs traded him.

Sure, but that isn't including Lofton's WAR, and not subtracting Cashner's. But now that I think about it, the Sandberg trade and Sosa trade both prob beat Aramis.

Right...Cashner has like 5.6 WAR since the trade. Lofton had 2.1 WAR with the Cubs in 2003. With Rizzo signed for 4 more seasons, its a pretty good bet that he will eclipse either of the other 2 trades

Without looking too closely, I would bet the net WAR for the Sandberg trade was mid-50's and the Sosa trade was probably around 50.

I know the Pirates WC game has been talked about but one of my favorite Jake memories from that game (and Jake in general) is when he struck out that guy early on and you could visibly see him say “that’s horsefeathering right.” I thought there was a gif of that but couldn’t find it.

You look like Anthony Rizzo in that picture

If we're going full on nostalgia of Pirates-lunacy, my favorite is this game(a Jake start too!): https://www.baseball-reference.com/boxes/CHN/CHN201608290.shtml

The game thread is entertaining to revisit as well: https://www.northsidebaseball.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=26&t=908&start=375

It's the Jordan over Ehlo moment for the Cubs.

By bWAR, at least, it’s closer to mid-60s for Sandberg and high-50s for Sosa.

When taking Steop into account and not giving Baltimore any credit for Feldman after he departed for free agency, that trade is a lot closer to the Rizzo and Aramis trades in net value than I would have thought. All in the 20s at this point. The Rizzo trade, obviously will blow by that over the next four years.

Not quite Aramis level, but Choi for Lee was pretty awesome too.

Yeah, Hendry made some great moves early in his tenure. 2008 really broke him though, that offseason was a trainwreck and I knew the party was over.

It's pretty crazy that within like 2 months of taking the job, Theo made a trade that will eclipse any from Hendry's tenure, including a few that were really horsefeathering good.
