Do the Cubs put Lackey on the NLCS roster if they're not going to start him this weekend? I'd like to have Rondon back, myself.

Rondon is most likely coming back regardless. Last year we added an extra pitcher and dropped an offensive player going from the NLDS to the NLCS. I'd guess we saw Martin's last game in a Cubs uniform.

Or they can drop Justin Wilson since Joe is only gonna use him in a total blowout.

The bullpen was just horrible last night. I guess I just didn't expect it now that the 108 year monkey is gone but Monty and CJ really horsefeathers the bed.

I couldn't believe Joe put CJ in that game. The man needs about 3 days to get his mind right

Man, at this point I have zero problem with Lackey starting game 1, or even really just writing it off.

I was gonna be real annoyed if nobody picked up what I was laying down.

It was worth seeing if he could throw strikes. It wasn't like Joe put him in for long. Clearly Joe is frustrated with CJ too.

I thought Joe using Carl was smart. He knew he was getting into Wade-Davis-pitches-3-full-innings territory. He used him for one batter. We had a 3 run lead. It was worth a shot. Every out was precious. If, by the grace of god, Carl comes in and is sharp and gives us a clean inning, the game is over. If not, we're still in the same shitty spot, but not much worse for the wear.

Coming into the game, I would have said Joe needed to be placed in a straight jacket if he used Carl. But I think the situation dictated it.

Having to start Lackey in a NLCS game

*I’m actually kinda fine with it vs short resting someone in Game 1/2 and prefer getting Lester/Hendricks/Arrieta on regular rest+ at home.

Did they ever use Happ or Avila?

Happ started game 2 and got 1 or 2 PH appearances. Avila didn’t appear. Rondon for Martin makes the most sense, imo. Hopefully Rondon is good, he was looking good at the end of the year and he’s been good before in short bursts when coming off extended rest like this.

Q- "Normal rest"

Lackey - Extended rest

Lester - +1 day rest

Hendricks +1 day rest (Arrietta ext rest)

Artietta extended rest (or Q normal rest)

G6

Q (+1) Lester (-1) Hendricks (-2) Lackey (+2)

G7

Lester (normal) Hendricks (-1) Arietta(-2) Lackey (+3)

So we'll catch up on rest by the time we roll around to any possible elimination game and have bullets to burn, but I think key will be how long our starters go. I think Lackey makes more sense in game 2 than game 1 because it will probably be a more active bullpen game and you get the rest day in between to recover. Still, dropping Martin or Lastella for Rondon makes sense.

The nats scared me more due a number of factors. 5 games instead of 7, the known factor of Daniel Murphy and his douchebagginess, and the general unknown factor of the nats.

We've seen these dodgers before (mostly) and am confident. Win.

I thought the Nationals were the best team in the NL, especially after fixing their bullpen. I’ve been irrationally unimpressed by the Dodgers all season.

My list was and still is:

1. Cubs

2. Nats

3. Dodgers

I kinda see the Cubs as a 100 win true-talent team, Nats about 97-98 and LA like 95-96.

The Dodgers way overachieved this season imo and a lot of times that ends when the overachieving team faces a great team in a 7 game series.

This is anybody's series. I think we are the better team and should win, but I am concerned that the Nats took a lot out of us, we don't have enough time to reset between series, and Im concerned that our bullpen looks like trash. The "I trust" list is now Davis and Strop, and Strop is always in danger of falling off that list.

I think give lackey the start and 90-95 pitches in game 1, then make him available out of the bullpen starting in game 3 (and actually use him this time). Activate Rondon, he's healthy right? Taste test Wilson in game 1 and pray he performs to his capabilities.

I like Lackey going in game one because I like the way it sets up game 5-6-7 for us, all on plenty of rest.

Then you have a rotation of

Lackey - Q - Lester - Jake - Hendricks- Q - Lester all on full rest, and a bullpen of:

Davis - Strop - Monty - Rondon - Lackey (3+) - Carl - Wilson

All said, Cubs win games 3, 5,6 and 7.

Game 2 is the only game that has any rest worries either way.

EDIT: I like the latter path because not only do you avoid giving Lackey a start, but the people who do get extra rest (Lester after 3 outings in 8 days, Arrieta with his hammy) are most likely to benefit from it.

I think we have to go with Q in game 1 because he has more of a chance to go longer in the game than Lackey. The bullpen rest concerns me more than the starters.

Wade shouldn't be available but everybody else should be fine with today's off day.

I worry about Lester game 2, but I guess if he looks bad early and the game gets out if hand you just hand the ball over to Lackey and say, just help our bullpen keep rested?

Yep, plus while the Dodgers haven't been a dumpster fire against LHP like last year, they're still more vulnerable to LHP with 2 of their 3 best hitters being LH, Grandal being much worse against LHP(so they sacrifice some D to go to Barnes), and other RH hitters(Hernandez, Forsythe) not having good years. Getting 4 LH starts in a 7 game series is a worthwhile goal.

On the other hand, that lineup screams nightmare fuel for Lackey, with 5/27 being a perfect illustration.

I was chatting with a buddy last night who is pretty left politically and was rage hating on Murphy. And then I informed him of his weirdo far right stances that he wasn't aware of and hilarity ensued. I hate that dude so much and you just know he was pissing and moaning about the Jay slide when he's done significantly worse.

How about this scenario?

What about Lackey starting Game 1, with Lester as the piggyback in relief? Try to get Lackey thru 3-4, try to get Lester thru 3-4. With Davis potentially unavailable, if the Cubs do somehow have a lead on Kershaw, they could get by with only 1-2 innings from their other relievers.

Game 1 going that way would allow the Cubs to bring back Lester to start Game 5 (and have him in the pen for a potential Game 7). Starting Lester in Game 2, means him starting game 6, which means no Lester in a potential Game 7.

It would also set up Q and Hendricks in 6 and 7 which I like, especially with Lester (proven out of the pen) and Arrieta (stuff plays best out of the pen of the remaining SP) available in the last game.

1- Lackey/Lester

2- Q

3- Hendricks

4- Arrieta

5- Lester

6- Q

7- Hendricks
