Lackey on Saturday? Yikes.

Why do so many people thunk the Cubs will starr Lackey? Quintana threw what amounted to a bullpen session, he'll be fine for Saturday.

There's been no confirmation. You could line it up:

Lackey

Quintana

Lester

Arrieta

Hendricks

Quintana

Lester

Quintana pitched yesterday, but it was only a couple pitches and not terribly different from a side session. Lester pitched Wednesday, but threw a lot more pitches. None of the big 4 is coming into Saturday or Sunday with "normal" rest. Quintana should be the closest to ready to go.

I guess it depends on how much the Cubs want to rest their starters. I wouldn't be surprised if Lackey started either game one or game two. Then Hendricks-Lester-Jake can go on normal rest for games three-five.

To me the bigger issue is that none of the 4 will be on a normal schedule for Saturday or Sunday. All 4 of them pitched either Wednesday or Thursday. So while Quintana could theoretically be ready on Saturday, who is ready Sunday? Lester after just coming off a 55-pitch mid-short rest, again on short rest? I don't like treating your guaranteed money pitcher that way at all.

I just came to ask this. It's hilarious how many people say "the Cubs burned Quintana" when he only threw 12 pitches. He should be able to start either Saturday or Sunday.

If you're going to have to start Lackey in one of the first two, which they'll have to do unless they bring Lester or Arrieta back on short rest, might as well give Quintana the extra day off.

I don't think anyone is really thinking Quintana wouldn't pitch EITHER of those days; the Lackey theories seem based more around giving Lester, Jake and Hendricks more rest.

Well they didn't burn him, but again, it's not just him. None of the 4 will be on full rest for Saturday or Sunday. If you don't use Lackey, you are starting a series off with 2 guys both pitching in one way shape or form, on short rest. If you are using Lackey in one of those games, why not game 1, so Quintana gets another day?

Yeah, you have more breathing room with a seven game series, so if Quinatana is good to go for game one? Great! But if he needs, or they think he needs, an extra day and Lackey has to start game one? NBD, IMO.

I expect the Cubs to go with Q Saturday with Lester Sunday on 3 days rest after what amounted to an extended bullpen session.

I think that is a mischaracterization of Lester's short rest outing. 55 pitches over parts of 4 innings in playoff atmosphere is not just an extended bullpen session. Short rest work is risky, back to back short rest outings is fraught with danger.

Yeah, I don't see the need to rush old man Lester back on short rest if Quintana is pitching one of the first two games. That seems more like a desperation move unnecessarily early in a series.

Yeah, Lester's outing has to be treated like a full, short rest outing. Quintana's outing was much more of a "bullpen session".

Home plate: Lance Barksdale

First base: Todd Tichenor

Second base: Mike Winters

Third base: Jim Wolf

Left field: Bill Welke

Right field: Alfonso Marquez

Eric Cooper will be on replay review for the first two games, with Barksdale taking replay duties from Game 3 through the end of the NLCS.

Agreed. Let lackey go against God. Dont blow what could be a solid start by Q facing God. Cubs wont beat Kershaw unless the offense hits another gear anyway

I had forgotten that the rainout meant short rest for Game 2. I think I probably still prefer Quintana then Lester with a quick hook for Lackey over Lackey then Quintana. Quintana I don't even consider going on short rest, and while Lester is a small risk, you can be quick with the hook to limit some of it. That would mean Lester's 2nd start isn't til Game 6 on 5 days rest, so the lasting effects are minimized too.

Lackey-Quintana-Hendricks-Lester-Jake works out pretty perfectly rest-wise, especially if Q and Hendricks are needed for games six and seven.

I'd rather Lester go over Hendricks, so you have a potential Q/Lester in 6 and 7.

Do the Cubs put Lackey on the NLCS roster if they're not going to start him this weekend? I'd like to have Rondon back, myself.

Rondon is most likely coming back regardless. Last year we added an extra pitcher and dropped an offensive player going from the NLDS to the NLCS. I'd guess we saw Martin's last game in a Cubs uniform.
