Sucks for Avila. Going from a starting catcher to a backup

Counterpoint: He's got a chance to win a ring.

Mccann's really the starter but was hurt for a bit. Avila played some 1B and DH, neither which will serve him much with the Cubs I imagine.

If he could spell Rizzo at first base once every 2 weeks that's a nice option to have.

I'm guessing Aaron Brooks DFA, but I guess it could always be someone like Frankoff, Floro, Leathersich, maybe Hannemann (woof). That's 5 candidates.

I'm guessing a mysteriously timed injury.

For the 40 man, it'd have to be a mysterious injury that puts someone on the 60 day DL.

I wonder if a trade like this is a signal towards approaching the playoffs with every starter on a very short leash and letting a super powerful good bullpen handle roughly half or a majority of each game. A lot of teams were starting to move in that direction over the past couple years, and the Indians wanted to leverage their two best relievers that way last year (and, uh, lost) but maybe thats the plan as far as any sort of "magic sauce" (that I agree doesn't exist, there's just way too much variance for anything to make a huge dent in a handful of games) in the playoffs.

Lackey was already on a very short leash last year, and I think Hendricks probably was too, we just never knew because he was really good the whole postseason. I'd bet everyone save Lester and maybe Quintana (depending how good he is the rest of the way) is going to be on a short leash this postseason.

So the road to repeat this year is Washington-LA-NYY? Not sold on the Astros.

i mean who the hell knows what the road is...yes we'll almost certainly have to beat washington first. beyond that, who knows. but the astros are the best team in the AL, assuming correa isn't dead.

No, he was on 60-day DL.

Brett Anderson is not on the Cubs 40-man roster. He was DFA'd. It's unclear if he will clear waivers still.

Yeah, I misread that whooooooole thing...

I loved this deal. Yes, it could hurt, but this was a go for it deal at a cost of a blocked guy in Candelario and a raw asset in Paredes. Its the type of move you live with when you go for it.

i'm having trouble seeing how it could even hurt

this is about as little i've cared about what we traded away in any trade one of my teams has ever made

If Candelario becomes an above average hot corner guy soon, one might wonder if he could've netted more in the off-season. Again, don't really think it'll hurt that much, but the possibility is there.

Candelario certainly wasn't going to get meaningful MLB at bats to change his perception, and the minor league season only has a month left. Plus Candelario has cooled off considerably after a high-BABIP April. He's also had nearly 650 PA at AAA so it's not like there's still some waiting to see how he reacts to the level. His value had only one place to go between now and the offseason, and it wasn't up.

The Cubs did trade away Tony Campana at one point. But I obviously get what you're saying.

It amazes me that ANY fans of other teams can even remotely question Theo, at this stage. Really? They don't think HE can think 3 moves ahead? Gutting the system? They don't realize he's better at restocking than anyone else? Its hilarious to see comments, then think of how all they've ACTUALLY got to look forward to, all they can hope for, is the day Theo leaves.

And then, you've likely still got Jed and Jason, with a loaded roster, to take over.....

There will be an outlier year on occasion, but this division is basically like the Yankees in the AL East for the past 20+ years. Except the Cubs don't even have a Red Sox to challenge them.

The Brewers need to set the first half of their 2017 to "One Shining Moment" and cherish those highlights for the entire non-playoff making 6 years Lewis Brinson and others give them, before their Rebuild:The Sequel begins to take shape. And they still don't realize how much they're fucked.

the lazy refrain for theo haters is "big deal he's overrated and wins by spending big market teams' money"

A close second to Will Perdue for Rodman

Well also the 'and if all else fails, he will just tank for 3 years and then spend some money and boom world series contender'

What ended up being the 40 man roster moves?

40 man was at 39 before the trade, so it was at 40 after with the removal of Candelario. Only moves were Grimm and Caratini to Iowa.

Ah, cool. Thought it was at 40. Thanks.
