[expletive], that's easily the coolest bit of Cubs news in a long time.

It’s definitely not. Now you can’t trade him.

because apparently teams aren't offering the long deals...at least not at the AAVs being sought.

the follow up tweet about the cba was dumb though.

actually, who the hell knows what is actually being offered by anyone. this is weird as horsefeathers. it's february 6th.

if you are willing to give butt-ass jason heyward 20 mil a year you should be shot if you aren't willing to give harper 30 mil

50% more per year, and 300% more over the course of a decade is a huge difference. No one is trading for Heyward and his entire contract. but acting like there's a negligible difference between what he's owed, and what Harper will be owed is illogical.

No it’s not. Not when the difference is the production between Heyward and Harper.

Fun fact: According to bWAR, Jason Heyward was more valuable than Bryce Harper last year in considerably fewer games.

Funner fact: bWAR is dumb.

lol remember when bWAR had Darwin Barney as one of the most valuable players in the game? that horsefeathers is wild.

bWAR hates Harper's defense (4.2 oWAR, -3.2 dWAR last season)

Harper had a bad year defensively but I can’t see any possible way you could say he was THREE WINS below replacement bad

That’s Adam Dunn level

that's what has cracked me up about the "lets just send heyward to the giants with alzolay!" or whatever talk. Why wouldn't they just sign bryce harper for *checks notes* the exact same amount of money

It's incredibly easy to talk me into good news re: Harper, but the Cubs being a short term deal favorite makes zero sense. 3 years is the window in which you have enough guaranteed money/arb years to worry about the luxury tax, and a short term deal is almost certainly higher AAV too. If the only reason they're avoiding Harper is because they're worried about his production or luxury tax concerns in years 6 through 10 then everyone with an office at Wrigley is fired.

I read that to mean that if he has to settle for a short term deal he would prefer to play for the Cubs. It also makes sense if the Cubs don't actually care about the luxury tax which they very likely don't regardless of what they say publicly.

Saw the new PECOTA projections this morning. Cubs, 82-80, third place.

Bryce is a need, not want.

PECOTA is complete trash. They project Montero to be the 20th best player in MLB this year..... Flowes and Austin barnes are in the top ~7.

I don't have a favorite projector or site, but Fangraphs has us at 88-74.

Basically I think the Cubs should sign Bryce to get us into the 90's heading into the season.

Yeah for sure, I’d lean towards Fangraphs ones but don’t really care. I think 88-93 wins is a decent range for projections for us. PECOTA seems to put way too much weight on defense and framing. Basically if you are a good framer it loves the player and the team.
