Situation reminds me, vaguely, of the Pujols situation several years ago. IIRC, Pujols had an offer from the Cardinals, the Angels topped it by a fair amount, and Pujols kept waiting and hoping the Cardinals would come back in. Sure feels like the Phillies have offered something significantly higher than the Nationals have offered, and it sure doesn't feel like there's a lot more teams out there waiting in the winds. It'll probably come down to whether or not the Nationals can come close enough and ... maybe ... whether or not Ted Lerner decides to step in, despite handing things off.

If he goes back to the Nationals, it wouldn't surprise me if it's a superbly complex deal with player options and team options mixed in, along with deferrals. Much as I've thought the Nationals all off-season ... I think I'm leaning towards the Phillies getting him. It's hard to see Middleton going back to the fan base with say, Keuchel/Kimbrel and calling it a big offseason after his comments.

i'll never understand these guys. i understand wanting attention, but what kind of attention are they really getting? they're an anonymous handle on the internet typing things. where is the satisfaction? like do they get hard when they see someone reply to something they just made up? i don't understand the endgame.

I think they're hoping that when they accidentally get something right, they can parlay it into a real gig.

That’s basically how Dierkes (spelling?) Got MLB Trade Rumors going I believe. He threw a bunch of horsefeathers out and got a thing or two right that drove traffic then just turned in to an aggregator. This would’ve been early to mid 2000’s.

So when Machado and Harper sign, then we're going to see the rest of the FA's all sign in like 36 hours, right? Feels like everyone is waiting on these two chumps

Chris Cotilo also got a job based on twitter. Not sure whether he had actual sources though.

He for sure did. He would break legit news at the Winter Meetings while still a teenager and had the respect of his.......well not peers, but of the industry.

On the other hand, it's an embarrassment that the best Cubs message board in the world has given Cat so much pub this offseason. That's something a Brewers board would do.

Yeah, but the attention was in a "I can't look away from this trainwreck" type of gaze, which is basically what this thread is all about, right?

I guess that could be right. Sort of when people post what R Mack tweeted.

Oh yeah I remember those days. I distinctly remember him posting the Cubs were going to trade Aramis Ramirez for Chone Figgins and I wanted to die.

He's full on legit now though they rarely break anything. It's just a good news aggregate site.

Can't compare Cotillo to these joke accounts. He was a kid but he was actually talking to people in the industry and posting real news.

Yeah we all wanted to dismiss him at the time but he had legit sources. I remember he broke the Arrieta/Strop trade by finding out the Steve Clevenger was on a plane to Baltimore.

SITTING ON A CORNFLAKE

I remember asking my mom what that meant when I was like 10 and her having to tip toe around the fact that John wrote that in a haze of acid
