That seems like a horsefeathers ton of money for a part time outfielder with a .728 OPS.

Also Jon Jay is a garbage player and I hate him and there's no way he can Edmonds his way into my heart.

Is that how much 1 WAR is worth now? Was just watching MLB Now today and they said a replacement level 1 WAR player is worth about $5 million. If the going rate is actually $8 million that's nuts.

I thought $5 was the number several years ago and it's been closer to $8 on the free agent market of late.

I don't love those K/BB/contact numbers from last year and his CF defense is pretty 'meh'. But he's not terrible I guess and is decent insurance in case Javy and/or Almora totally flop. If one of them takes a step forward, hopefully we won't need to give Jay a lot of ABs.

he was worth 2-3 wins when playing most of the time for the cards in 2012-14. last year he was a one win player with less than 400 plate appearances. it's fine, and it's good insurance in case almora stinks.

PS, thanks for everything dex.

It's so early in the offseason that there's obviously potential for more moves and I'll give the FO the benefit of the doubt. But going into the year with Jay/Almora as our CF seems to be kinda risky and half-assing it out there and with the OF in general. Conversely if saving money on the OF means bringing back Chapman or signing Jansen consider me onboard. Edited by Cubswin11

Yeah, I thought FG or something said it was now, like, $8-8.5 million per WAR.

It could also mean that we intend on going with Javy as primary 2B, Zobrist in RF, Heyward in CF, Schwarbs in LF with Almora and Soler as bench.

I probably like this more than most and more than I should. Jay is a nice complement to Almora, and the best part is that even if Almora fails he'll have to earn his playing time because Heyward can slide to CF with Baez(via Bryant/Zobrist) filling in instead. This is the Coghlan roster spot for a new year where we have Schwarber but not Fowler. It was probably possible to find a higher upside or better option on the trade market, but that costs stuff and you also gain some certainty by moving fast and leaving the speculative stuff for higher impact moves.

The last time I saw it mentioned at Fangraphs, it was at $8.5M per WAR now.

This is fine. I dislike that it makes it even less likely we're bringing Fowler back, but Jay is a nice fit in that case.

Not really that risky, in my opinion. The core of this lineup allows a team like the Cubs to not have to be that strong at every single position offensively. It would be cool, but it doesn't seem risky. Plus, Jay's OBP is usually pretty good.

I don't have a problem with this. It's a 1 year deal and gives you another option in CF. I really kind of feel like they have plenty of versatility in the OF already and this just gives you an additional option. I didn't want to see them use trade chips for an outfielder. Maybe he had a multi year offer in the table somewhere else so they gave him slightly more to take a 1 year deal, that seems unlikely but 8 million doesn't go as far as it used to.

I mean, it may not work out as well as the last eight million dollar contract the Cubs gave out for an outfielder, but that's a pretty high bar anyway at this point.
