Fairly disappointed if a decent starter doesn't end up here. As of right now the Cubs are a worse team than they were just a few months ago.

Is that true though, assuming you aren't counting the team that took the field in the WS with Schwarber?

In: Schwarber, Jay, Davis, Uehara, Duensing

Out: Chapman, Fowler, Ross, Cahill, Hammel

Up in air: Wood, Smith, Coghlan

I guess it is but not to the point where I'd be too concerned.

I'm concerned about the pitching, pitchers inherently suck and are unpredictable and if the 5 penciled in the rotation choose to do that right now the back ups can get real ugly, real quick. I know you can't plan for 2-3+ guys sucking or getting hurt but the non-existent depth for a single injury/regression scares the horsefeathers out of me.

You're a few wins worse in CF. 2017 Heyward over 2016 Heyward can literally cancel that out. Should see continued improvement on all the young guys. You've got Schwarber back.

Montgomery versus Hammel is a wash. The rest of the rotation should basically stay in the same range, as a whole.

The pen looks to be improved, with Davis and Chapman a wash, plus the addition of Koji.

I think we're probably a bit better altogether myself.

No 2017 Heyward will double down on 2016 Heyward. Schwarbers knee will implode. Montogmery will be second half Hammel all year and Rizzos tiny face will shrink into itself. Enjoy 2016 guys. You can tell your grandkids on your deathbed about the last time the Cubs won the WS in 2016, 100 years ago (medical advances will keep us all alive that long)

That's too bad, but if he demanded a one year deal, it's probably for the best we didn't have the highest offer. You don't want to delay Montgomery getting a starter's workload another year AND have to fill three rotation spots next offseason. I would've been happy with Ross if there was a second year or option thrown in, but not on a one year deal. Now, you might as well try to beef up the bullpen a bit more, as right now both Smith and Duensing have a spot. And obviously trade for a starter with options; I kind of have my eye on Cessa from the Yankees.

i thought you were gonna go on to follow up all that stuff with "so they only win 97 games and a world series"

another plus for 2017 is that willson will be catching the majority of games. willson was really horsefeathering good when he was catching and now there will be more of that.

they can also be about 10 games worse and still win the division, and then they are in the postseason as playoff veterans that "know how to win"

Like the sentiment but considering what the Cubs have done the last 2 postseasons taking down postseason veterans like the Cardinals, Giants and Dodgers, I'm not sure what value your last sentence has.

I was about to point out that he seems like kind of a [expletive] based on my memory of his Twitter history, but looking at it now, seems like he just went back and forth with a few fans right after the NLCS and called out a group of Cubs fans for being idiots and throwing beer at games. Pretty mild.

What kept him out for most of the season last year? Seems like a decent enough depth option if the medicals check out.

I think he's had just about every arm/shoulder injury a pitcher can have over the last few years

He had some decent number in limited innings last year (15 IP). 8.4 K/9, nearly 55% GB rate, averaged 92.5 on his FB and topped out at ~95, looks like he's pretty much a FB and Cutter/Slider pitcher out of the pen.

Apparently he ended the season on the DL with forearm tightness. So that bodes well.

Also odds that he spends more than a week before hitting waivers again?
