Shades of Lidle/Munson, if evidence shows he was piloting. What a snake-bitten franchise.

And if they were out fishing, the irony...

I'm so confused by this post...at first I thought you were thinking Fernandez played for the Yankees...but then you said the thing about fishing.

Are you saying the Yankees are snake bitten?

he was comparing a boat crash to plane crashes, and the fishing thing was a dumb reference to the fact that he played for the marlins

edit: nevermind, now i see what you're confused about

I got that part...but who is the snake bitten franchise?

like i said, at first i thought he thought fernandez played with the yankees. then he said the fishing thing which made it pretty clear he knew he played for the marlins. so who is the snake bitten franchise? the yankees? just seems like an oddly irrelevant thing to say. especially when munson happened like 40 years ago and lidle like ten.

anyway, i don't want to sidetrack this thread...i was just voicing my confusion when i read that post.

A few years ago, my niece and a bunch of her friends were in the bleachers at Wrigley. Jose was really cool to them and joked around with them and then took a selfie with one of their phones.

Selfishly as a baseball fan, I can't help but think what the equivalent would be if this happened to a Cubs player and how we would feel after losing a cornerstone of the franchise. And it becomes magnified even further because he was one of the few truly bright spots for Miami. This is absolutely devastating for their franchise. I assume the answer is no, but is there any allowance or precedent for compensation (i.e. draft picks) to be granted to a team in such extreme circumstances?

It would appear my post in the other thread came across much differently than I intended. I did not see this thread, figured people would just add on to the old one, if I had seen this one I would have never made that post. . Anyway, I apologize for the other post, I truly meant no offense. Mods, could you please delete it ?

Pretty dickishly worded regardless of if you saw this thread or not imo

This sucks so much. He was so good and so fun to watch. And he was so freaking young. And then I heard he had a young one on the way...

I'm so broken up about this. He seemed like a genuinely kind person. And he had so much fun when he played baseball. All of these stories that I am hearing are really getting to me. He was full of joy and passion and a love of life. And his backstory is heartbreaking and inspiring. I really can't believe this. He had a huge impact on so many people. I am devastated.

I would never make a joke of any kind when a young man dies, baseball player or not. I was feeling shocked and sad when I wrote it, I had just found out. In my mind it was posted in sadness, and that's the way it was intended. I already apologized to those who took it differently. Now I'll let all you perfect [expletive] get back to your grieving.

yea, the impact on me really surprised me. I see I am not alone in that.

I honestly never thought about Fernandez much beyond acknowledging that he was one of the game's best pitchers, and IMO, probably the most dominating RHP. I am very surprised how devastated I've felt all day after I heard the news first thing this morning. Only 24.....horsefeathers. Way too soon.

I've shed a lot of tears today watching other grown men try and hold back tears while talking about him in press conferences and interviews today. Mattingly's presser was rough.

Also, FWIW on the dickish comment, my brother and I have been talking about future possible acquisitions and trade targets and we talked about Fernandez a lot. He called me this morning and was the one to break the news. He said "Guess we're not trading for Fernandez now, huh?" and he said it kind of solemnly. I didn't know what had happened and my worst case scenario when he said it triggered and I said "Oh no... did he sign a contract extension?" and he goes "No, dude, he died you haven't heard about it yet?" and I went from groggy to utter shock and disbelief. So I can see why this dude said what he said and didn't mean offense, but whatever.

This is how I've been feeling, too.

His life story might be the most amazing of any player in baseball right now. Combine that he could have been better than Kershaw with the best personality it's hard to describe. Wish I watched him more than I did.
