scroll all the way down to the 1A rankings, thats my alma mater at #1. 74 kids in the ENTIRE HS this year, and it wasn't any bigger in 1992 when I graduated there

go Hornets

last year, they finished 3rd in State in 1A. That seemed like a once-in-a-lifetime deal considering how tiny #myschool is and likely will always be..until today

Scales Mound Hornets play for 1st place Saturday morning. If they win, they will be the smallest school in Illinois history to win any state championship in any sport with a buzzing enrollment of 70 students for the entire high school

GO HORNETS

eta: these kids are doing something we all tried to do but ran into the very real reality of what it means to play sports at a small nano-school. I couldnt be more proud of them

i used to play football and baseball against Erik, the Head Coach, he played for our rival. Love what he's done for SM

2022: 3rd in state

2023: 2nd in state

Amazing for 70 kids

Big Iowa guy here obviously. I struggle to watch them. I struggle with women's basketball in general. I just can't do it. I knew some on the 1993 Final Four team, and even then I could only manage to stomach 1 game.  And they were free for students to get into.

Anywho, last night was a bit of a weird one. She almost had a quadruple double adding in turnovers. And her 10th rebound just randomly showed up at the end of the game. It was really odd because they had a triple double counter up for a good chunk of the 2nd half, and she was stuck at 9 rebounds for a long time.

But what she's doing for the sport is bonkers. She's shooting almost 60% on shots from 25+ feet, and she takes a lot of them. They sell out their home games, and they averaged something like 4k more fans at road games over the averages of those teams. She certainly puts butts in the seats.

Beach volleyball story, sort of: A year or two ago, I got Misty May-Traenor personally annoyed with me.

My niece was in the same gymnastics class as her daughter and they were good friends.

My niece is an absolute psycho, and her highest goal in life at the time was to learn more dirty words and rude gestures. She knew such words existed, but the adults in her life had mostly managed to keep her from learning them. She had "crap" and knew that there was an F word but didn't know what it was. With me being the fun uncle, she had identified me as her best shot and frequently begged me to teach her new swears and gestures.

So remember that bit in Talladega Nights where Ricky Bobby gives his rival an upside-down middle finger and says "Can you hear this? I better turn it up" as he rotates his hand up?   I taught her that but with the 90s forehead L instead of the middle finger.  Within a week, all the girls in the gymnastics class were doing it, and a three-time Olympic gold medalist was among the gym moms annoyed with me for introducing it.

Bonus psycho niece story:

I took her and two of her younger siblings to watch some friends play beer league hockey a few years ago.  We sat behind my friends' bench and I taught the kids the concept of heckling, giving them some cleaned up lines from Letterkenny to yell at players from behind the bench.  It was all in good fun but I got a little carried away and had my 7 year old niece yell "that was your guy 2-6, just end it you bender" and her younger sister chimed in "yeah just end it."

I immediately realize I had gone too far.  But you can't just tell these kids "I shouldn't have taught you that, please don't repeat it" because that just tells them they have something good and they'll never let it go.  So I told them that "bender" was a super naughty word, like the worst word ever, and I shouldn't have taught them that please don't repeat it.  They were so excited to know a super bad word and whispering it among themselves that they forgot the rest of the stuff they learned that night.

Six months later my niece is in one of her oppositional defiance fits and screams "I hate you, you *bender*" at her mom and waits for the big reaction she expected for using such a horrible swear.

I know next to nothing about NASCAR, can anyone explain what this Chicago Street Race is?  I figured it was just some exhibition or maybe a new street racing circuit that they have is various cities across the US, but it seems like its an actual NASCAR race just like the Daytona 500?  I thought all NASCAR tracks were oval shaped but obviously this one is much different.

While most NASCAR races are on ovals, they have had a couple road course races in the past. I think they used only do 2 (Watkins Glen and another one), but now are doing more. However, those were always race tracks, this is their first actual street circuit.

I think NASCAR has been losing viewership over the last few years and is trying to turn it around, especially with F1 now making inroads into the US that they hadn't been able to before, with now 3(?) races in the US (Miami, COTA in Texas, and Las Vegas). NASCAR last year and this year did a short track race at the Coliseum in LA and this seems like their next step in trying to grow audience in areas they haven't been able to.

I'm in.  Let's see how high, far and fast they can go.  If they're willing to take the risk, I'll watch.

They had better not pull another stunt where the Russian athletes get to go under a different name like that Olympics a few years ago.  I believe it was "Russian Olympic Committee" or some nonsense which basically made the punishment worthless.

TIL the Vatican has a sports club (Atletica Vaticana) and a member is competing in the world road cycling championship today.

Not entirely sure the organisers in Glasgow have a Vatican flag ready for the podium ceremony, but the chance they'll need one is extremely small.
