it just occurred to me that my distaste for chapman combined with my anger that we might not be extending him as part of the deal makes for a real "the food here is terrible! and such small portions!" situation.

This dude is a blogger and has been "reporting" throughout. Not sure his legitimacy, but seems quasi legit at first glance. Anyways, he's sticking with the 'Deal is done but Cubs will only move forward with extension' story

which in any real world setting effectively means the deal is not done. There are three parties to the deal if the cubs won't move forward without an extension.

Yep. Assuming the trade happens, the baseball side of me really wants the extension, and the rest of me really doesn't. Not exactly an ideal situation.

Putting aside the deplorable person Chapman seems to be, who the hell cares about giving up some A-ball prospect and 3 nothings for the best reliever in the game?

we're getting him for two months. and he's not the best reliever in the game.

also, i will never be able to put aside the deplorable person he is, but that's a completely different issue.

what's with all the nonsense about 2 months oh ye of little faith

glad we're taking our pointless distinctions to the masses.

the point is obviously that you're getting him for a short amount of time, so, from the perspective of someone making that argument, his value is more limited. whether it's exactly 2 months or 3 months or 95 days isn't terribly relevant. It's 75-85 games, assuming a long playoff run.

if you're going to sign a guy that chokes women, don't you want him around for as long as possible?

oh wait

So I check this thread and there are ten new pages of posts with exactly zero new information. Someone text me when something happens (no don't)

sheehan is underrated as a dumbass. he loves to pick issues and just harp on them forever. lately his fav is that schwarber is completely incapable of playing any defensive position and probably can't hit anyway.

He's the same guy who wanted to be the Cubs contrarian going into this season based on the plexiglass crap, right? I always confuse him with another guy, so I'm not positive.

I'm not sure where he got his reputation. i'm sure it's earned. but I can't remember ever being impressed by him.

he was an early baseball prospectus guy and, to me at least, has basically just always coasted on being associated with those impressive people. even then he was just the guy who didn't do numbers but was supposedly good at writing and reporting or something. now he just tweets about how the cubs suck and we should buy his newsletter.

couple notches about will carroll at best.

mocking derwood is fun, but that's not exactly what I'd take to the bank as "news"

'Actually Schwarber can't hit' is my favorite dumb argument in a long long time.

Is anybody saying that he actually can't hit?

Or are they just saying he's probably not as good as he looked last year, and a 120 wRC+ bat and subpar defense means he probably isn't a 4-5 fWAR regular in the making?

Multiple national baseball journalists reporting the deal has been completed isn't news?

the people running with trying to gotcha theo on character as the narrative are going to be annoying

1 - making an exception would not mean it isn't still an important factor to them

2 - i think they've mostly discussed character in the sense of looking for it in the amateurs/prospect insomuch as it affects baseball...work ethic and crap like that and how likely they are to reach their potential as a result.

bernstein already has some column up about how this is some paradigm shifting move and theo was lying about caring about character

and the two posts below yours were rightly questioning whether any of these are actually reporting a done deal or just piggybacking on others reporting the same info everyone has had without any indication that it's final.
