It seriously pisses me off when that happens to a young guy that is working on his plate discipline, trying to take the right approach at the plate, hoping to turn himself into a reliable hitter. Horrible. Disgusting. Infuriating. Give that man the walk that he rightfully earned.

I'm still fuming. That first blown call wasn't even close. It was horrible. It missed its spot. There was no way any player is swinging at that junk. What's a guy supposed to do when you are calling that a strike?

Going back to the Soler at bat, has anyone ever done a study on 3-0 strike calls and whether umpires are statistically more likely to expand their zone?

Yes, 3-0 zones are statistically larger than average, and 0-2 zones are statistically smaller. There's an argument to be made for making the players decide at bats instead of umpires, but at the major league level where the players are so good and the stakes so high, I don't really think it should be as significant as it is.

I don't know of one, but I'm sure it has been done. It seems obvious they do. I don't have a problem with that for close pitches (this one was not), but on 3-1, you have to give the guy a walk.

Why is Cahill still in there?

I wonder if Joe was briefed on rain coming and did not want to burn another pitcher due to rain
