i'd have to think Schwarber, Soler, Almora, Cease gets you in the door

- Schwarber they can play at just 1B and be AL Silver Slugger...or catch, play LF, whatever

- Almora is the exact player Scioscia would create had he the power to do so, and steps right in there to 'replace' Trout

- Soler is handsome and still has immense offensive upside

- Cease is the Thor starter pack

maybe another team could top that, but who's to say if they would; Boston could ponder Moncada, Bradley, Devers, Espinosa but that's a combined million years away from contributing, whereas we can offer 3+ immediate impact players...LAD could entice, but hard to see Arte surrendering Trout to cross-town competitor unless he wants mass-emigration from fans

still funny to think that we could make a serious offer for the best player in baseball without detracting at all from a record-pace-setting roster or parting with one of the reputed top 3 prospects

edit: definitely worth noting that he's owed 3/102 starting '18 and there might not be a ton of teams equipped to accommodate that commitment

Russell, Schwarber, Contreras, Torres, Almora, Vogelbach (since it's an AL team) and their pick of the pitching prospects for Simmons and Trout. And throw in paying for Hamilton's rehab or CJ Wilson's Old Spice commercial overruns if you need to.

I admit I don't know much about Trout other than his awesomeness. Is he a good fit for the clubhouse? I am fine with giving away prospects to get such a powerhouse, but I feel like Russell, Schwarber, and certainly Bryant are key pieces of the team at this point... Guys like Baez and even Szczur feel the same way right now. Soler seems expendable, but at the same time, I feel like he's a couple of good starts from being a powerhouse again. That doesn't mean I wouldn't include him in a deal for Trout in a heartbeat... but It's not always about the best players... It really is about the best team.

I gotta admit this has shakier legs to stand on than Trump asking Hilary Clinton on a date. :D :D

But where smokes starts to appear in trickles there could be fire later on. I say wait until this year's Winter meetings and if the Halos flop badly this year they may reconsider. What is their GM really going to say, "Sure we are floundering and are ready to set up a flea market". You never say never. The Rangers traded ARod so who knows.

I have feeling the FO isn't really worried about something like this unless the player coming back would be some kind of Milton Bradley nutcase; the best player in the game would probably fit in just fine. Plus he and Rizzo can share tinyface stories.

Pretty sure Texas traded A-Rod because they didn't want to keep paying his ridiculous contract

The thing though is that I remember vaguely the Rangers owner committed to that contract when they signed (I could be wrong and I probably am) but the point is that ARod was still in his prime and considered one of the top 2 if not best player in the game. Trout's contract along with Pujols will consume more than 35% of their budget (189M) in 2018 and beyond. That may become an albatross that make Moreno think about it this winter. Crazier can and have happened. I don't give this a snowball's chance in hell of happening but there have been a few articles in the past 3 days. All you have to do is google "Mike Trout trade" and boom a few hits appear. A few tweets as well. So there has been some speculative smoke for whatever that is worth.

Here is a link looking back on the Arod trade:

http://sportsday.dallasnews.com/texas-rangers/rangersheadlines/2015/02/17/flashback-the-deal-in-2004-that-sent-alex-rodriguez-from-the-rangers-to-the-Yankees

And the part where their owner stated ARod would be part of the core for the foreseeable future.

So how did it all come together? Why did Mr. Hicks, three weeks after promising fans that newly anointed team captain Mr. Rodriguez would remain a Texas Ranger for the foreseeable future, decide that it was time for his $252 million shortstop to go?

The short answer is that the Yankees suddenly needed a replacement for third baseman Aaron Boone, who on Jan. 16 seriously injured his left knee during a pickup basketball game.

First, Mr. Rodriguez had to agree to move from shortstop, where he has won Gold Glove awards for fielding excellence the last two seasons. Then the Rangers and Yankees, after deciding that Texas would get Alfonso Soriano and a minor leaguer to be named later, had to determine how to divvy the remaining $179 million Rodriguez is owed over the next seven seasons.

Doesn't mean it's reality

I never said it was or would be reality. Just sayin sometimes where there is some smart me there might be fire later on. Crazy things happen every day. I never say never.

Their loss, any team should want to do that first ARod FA contract every single time. They were just a trash franchise and, unsurprisingly, trading a GOAT candidate didn't move the needle much.

This. If it is just prospects to get a hold of a generational player then I do that all day every day. Our starting lineup is pretty much set but if and when you get the very rare opportunity you jump on it. Now back to reality.

the angels would be better off keeping trout and hoping to walk into some good FA signings or something in the next few years, maybe pujols dies and they get his contract off the books

I'm still hoping that McCutchen pulls a Heyward and says, "You know what... this winning thing would be easier if I played for the other team."

yeah he might do that when he becomes a free agent. before the 2019 season. at which point he will be 32 years old.

You say that as if it were an issue.

If McCutchen wants to come play here when he's 32, I will welcome him with open arms. He'll almost certainly be better than whoever we have in center at that time, whether it's Fowler or Heyward or whoever.

Thanks, but I'll take Bryce at that point.

Lmao.

Just to be clear, I never said I would rather have McCutchen.

I was just saying it might be somewhat more realistic for us to land McCutchen.

I would take Harper or Trout any day.

what kind of contract do you think he will be looking for when he hits free agency?

I would love to answer that, but I simply don't have any idea.

What I do know is that he's super good, and we want guys that are super good. I'm hoping our front office isn't gonna be all, "well, we don't want to be THAT good".

No thank you on signing a 32-year-old Andrew McCutchen to some ridiculous contract. His defense has already completely eroded. He just won't be able to play center field by then. So he's a corner outfielder for the duration of a presumably lengthy, exorbitant contract. His value on the bases is all but gone. He's been making less and less contact.

He was a star, and probably still is. And the Pirates have been incredibly fortunate to have him for a long time, while he was a star. But he's already slowly falling off. And he's just not going to be a good value in 2019, let alone nearly a decade from now when that next contract might run out.

I just want to go on record, once again, as being one of the only people on the, "HOLY horsefeathers! GO GET JIM EDMONDS!" bandwagon after the Padres dumped him. I was also possibly the only person on this entire forum that wanted to re-sign him after 2008 (to a minimum deal, of course). The guy then took a year off baseball and came back in 2010 and OPS'd .846.

albert pujols was super good when he signed with the angels. would you like to be paying pujols $165 million for the next 6 years, or perhaps you prefer paying anthony rizzo at $100 million less to be a much better baseball player?
