also almora might actually be good

Huh? He held the bat really high, comparatively speaking to Rizzo's/Heyward's hands. Are you thinking of Aramis? I think he lowered his hands over the course of his career/time with us.

Shout out to J-Hey for busting his ass in the off-season. He owned his problems, handled himself very well during his struggles, and he worked his ass off to get better.

Yeah, I agree. Never doubted the work ethic and commitment to improve. I just hate his new swing, but it's working so far. If he keeps this up I'll gladly eat some crow at the end of the season :D .

So you like his old swing?

I was thinking of Fred McGriff. Was Lee's adjustment standing on top of the plate?

Got it, I think Lee's adjustment was opening up his stance a bit and maybe even holding his hands higher.

So left-handed curveballers seem to be his kryptonite

He's had a weird career vs LHP, some years he's been entirely acceptable and even pretty good. In 2010 he had a .755 OPS, 2013 .801, 2015 .704, then in 2014, 2012 and 2011 he hap OPS's in the .400s, .500s and 600s vs them.

man this guy is going to suck for the entirety of his contract isn't he. At least it's just six more seasons.

He's going to technically be more valuable than he was last year, I guess.

What a dumb bust; this guy should be a baseball god.

Blame Masnke

In all seriousness, he was pretty much perfectly fine from 2012-15, with a little blip in '14. Whatever we did to try to unlock more power in spring of '16 seemed to really horsefeathers him up and he's never recovered.

I'm still pretty optimistic about Heyward. Maybe I'm stubborn but I don't think guys who hit well for thousands of PAs simply lose that ability entirely without a more legit reason than he has.

Heyward has historically been a decently better hitter in the 2nd half, so hopefully that combining with more time to work through kinks in the adjustments he's made will have him more like a 3 win player for the rest of this year and next. That'd be a disappointment compared to the hopes for him, but at least it wouldn't be underwater on his contract and if he improves slightly upon it he might opt-out after '18 anyway.

He's like the 2017 Cubs personified; "at some point he HAS to get better....right?"

How do you feel about Zobrist?

I dunno, if he doesn't start getting hot by the end of the month then I'm going to be a bit pessimistic he's going to regain 2016 form. His plate discipline and ability to switch hit help, but he wouldn't be a guy you have to find a place for every day if he's not the best option.

That's how I feel as well. Either that wrist injury sapped a ton of his strength or he is feeling the effect of multiple deep postseason runs (or both) but he's just looked beat this year. He needs to have a big second half and get closer to that 380 OBP guy again.
