He's like a combination of Dwight Smith and Henry Rodriguez.

yeah but at least Henry Rodriguez could put up 20-30 HRs and a above average OPS+

of course, he didn't do that until he was 29

And he looked like he was 45.

I've seen Soler from about 3 feet away. He is a physical specimen to behold, and I really want him to succeed. I hope he can figure something out this season.

Is it time to start(?) worrying about Soler?

Offensively, he's doing a lot of things well and it's being covered up by a .204 BABIP. Walks are up, strikeouts are down.

He's still a dumpster fire defensively so he's not high on my list of guys I'm excited about, but he's at least got the vague raw potential to dong his bad defense away, and he definitely belongs on an MLB roster regardless.

there are some good signs there: he's really improved his discipline from where it was last year (mostly disastrous) to acceptable levels and he seems to have added loft to his swing now and is hitting a lot more fly balls; he was never going to make it as an empty batting average guy

so you can see the gains his fellow expatriate Yasmany Tomas has made and it's not unforeseeable to imagine him as a similar type of power bat but you hope he will be less of a complete liability in the field, and this is perhaps sanguine...i don't close the book on it because we've seen coaching/instruction do immense amounts of good in helping player performance (Fowler, Bryant, Russell) greatly outpace a player's reputation

and i still don't know how he ended up on 2nd after Bryant's ball hit off the wall the other day (eventually costing a run)

Yeah, him seemingly adding some serious TOOTBLAN tendencies to his game kinda quells any hope I have for him to make up for his deficiencies via his bat. It's, like, "damn, dude, you already suck defensively, but now you gotta suck at THIS, too?" It feels like he's got to REALLY hit well to offset how stank he is at everything else.

I didn't think the day would come, but it appears that Kyle is higher on Soler than I am.

I'm hoping he becomes this years Starlin. struggles/sits most games for a while, while they work on things with him and then something just clicks/he gets hot for a few months when he starts getting more playing time.

That just feels like you're cruelly teasing a dog with a delicious treat.

and then we trade him for a useful pitcher?

Yeah, same

Yeah, same

We could use a really good left fielder more than a pitcher.

His 10.7BB% is way above league average and his 22.6K% is down near 7.5% from last year, so why is Soler OPSing .552? I'm afraid the changes the Cubs made to get more loft in his swing are probably cause for what we're seeing this year. His LD% is down 7 from last year and his FB% is up from 30% to 43% which is Bautista territory. All of this would be fine if Soler was putting up premier slugging ratios like 20%HR/FB, but he's only putting up 8.5%HR/FB. Thanks to those drastic changes in batted ball profile you can't even call his .202babip unlucky. The off season changes basically took away what Soler does best, hit missiles. Last year's Soler with a 10.7BB% and 22.6% is very likely an .800+ OPS guy.

Trade him and stuff for Teheran, move Dex to left and call up Almora. Keep Dex in center, put KB in left & Javy at 3rd other days. Piggyback lesser two by then of Hammel, Lackey and Hendricks. Profit?

HR/FB ratios are not crazy predictive. Soler's has a decent chance of going up, especially when the wind blows out.

Yeah, looking at LD% and HR/FB% is a little silly right now. I mean, he's hit 24 fly balls all year.

Almora playing over Javy and to a lesser extent Soler is crazy talk at this point & i understand hes had some nice improvement.
