Yep. And it's not like I'm "Trout or bust!" I mean, if a Jose Fernandez becomes available, count me in on that, too. But, as you said, rotation post-2017 is my biggest concern with this team. I don't really care who is catching or playing left field for us in the playoffs this year. I figure we have enough talent elsewhere and enough serviceable options at those spots that I'm not dying to make a move there. Maybe if you could get a Josh Reddick for reasonably cheap. But we aren't in a position where we need to make a desperation move to upgrade from Miguel Montero and David Ross.

post-2017 pitching isn't something i particularly worry about; we'll most likely have similarly elite defense throughout with Russell, Almora, Rizzo, Bryant, Heyward? as fixtures and a powerhouse lineup upon adding Contreras (and possibly? the NL DH)

so let Jake & John walk and just sign Tanaka/Garcia/Cobb/Darvish/Chatwood/Tillman/Pineda/Eovaldi/Duffy/Lynn/Buchholz/Liriano...there are at least a dozen guys that are perfectly fine options like Lester, Lackey and Hammel currently are

and the year after has Fernandez/Harvey/Keuchel/Richards/Kershaw?/Price? plus, fwiw

Javy, McKinney, a non-Cease low level pitching prospect, and a pair from the Williams/Zastrysny/Rademacher/Young/Taylor Davis/Black/Rivero/Beeler/Alcantara (who sadly lumps in with this lot at this point) aisle for Teharen and Vizcaino.

Basically, Javy (who could be a cornerstone in their rebuild) + a big league ready-ish spare part for Teharen/A top 100 prospect and change for Vizcaino.

Who hangs up first?

The Cubs probably are less interested in the average team in Vizcaino, having seen him up close as long as they did. And the Braves might prefer to Soler to Baez since they have Swanson and Albies coming in the middle infield. Otherwise I don't think that's terribly off base.

This summer’s trade market will favor relief pitchers, not starters, writes Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe. While the pool of starters who are expected to be available looks shallow and largely unappealing, the opposite is true in regards to bullpen options. Cafardo points to Aroldis Chapman, Andrew Miller, Arodys Vizcaino, Jeremy Jeffress, Jeanmar Gomez, Sean Doolittle and Will Smith, among many others, as relievers who could be on the move in the next couple months.

Here’s more from Cafardo:

The 30-27 Blue Jays are in the thick of the playoff race, but if they fall out of it, right fielder Jose Bautista and first baseman/designated hitter Edwin Encarnacion (both pending free agents) are prime trade candidates. The Cardinals, Cubs and Hunter Pence-less Giants would all have interest in Bautista, according to Cafardo.

Bautista in this lineup would be hilarious

I don't particularly want to go out and trade for him, but it would be stupidly good at scoring runs

I think he'd definitely fit well in the lineup. And he'd be no worse in LF than what the Cubs have had. But he'd be a liability during a bench-clearing brawl. Would hate to see him get his ass kicked again by someone like Matt Carpenter or Sean Rodriguez.

I DO want the Cubs to trade for Bautista if the Blue Jays fall out of contention. I know he rubs some old-school types the wrong way, but I love his intensity (and the bat flips). I know what Soler did last year in the playoffs and maybe he'll be incredible again, but I trust the experience Bautista would bring to this team. Seriously, watch his ABs and how locked in he is. His BB/K ratio is always good and I think he would be a monster for us in the playoffs hitting in the 4/5 spots. I'm not sure how much his defense has declined, but I'm sure he would be okay in LF. On par with Soler, probably.

I have no clue what we'd have to give up for a 2-month rental, but this was his slash line in the playoffs last yr:

.293/.408/.659 (1.067 OPS, 4 HRs, 8/7 BB:K) :good:

Small sample size caveat, of course (41 ABs)

Pretty sure that's not the case with anyone here, fortunately.

I would pay lots of money to see the bat flip vs Wainwright or Bum then to walk around the bases at a pace that would make Ortiz cry for joy.

Almora getting the call technically fills that whole "we want young ML hitting" thing teams are on for their pitching. Hopefully he slappy mcslappersteins a good callup together here, I think he can.

We'll need to replace Fowler after either this year (if he opts out, which I think is likely given his monster season) or after 2017, so I think trading Almora would be a mistake at this point.

Pay no attention, Tom/Godzilla has a weird hard-on hate for Almora for reasons which are incomprehensible. It's like Keith Law and Sczur only more stupid.

I'm not opposed to trading Schwarber at all, to be honest, but I'm not ever going to advocate trading him for a [expletive] reliever.

Man why do so many ppl want to trade Schwarber?...You really should be opposed to trading Schwarber -- he's an excellent, young disciplined hitter who can play C part-time and is a great teammate with great makeup. You don't trade those kind of players, except for M. Trout or B. Harper.

Theo and the Cubs FO loves Schwarber -- and dammit if they love Schwarber so should you! Pardon my language...

I'm just going to float the name Fernando Abad out there. Never paid much attention to him, but he comes up on the fringe of MLBTR's trade candidates list. Certainly not the sexiest of options, but looks like a perfect fit in the lefty reliever search. Always been serviceable, but putting up some great numbers this year- 0.87 ERA, 1.016 WHiP, 5/22 BB/K over 20.2 IP, but not enough to fool anybody into giving up anything of real value. Has another year of arbitration eligibility as well. I figure one from the Rademacher/Young/Beeler/Black isle plus something raw, low level, and mid ceiling could do the trick.

Abad is exactly the type of guy they should target (assuming he really has solved his problem with HRs) Lefties are hitting .111 and have a .286 OPS against. I'd much rather see Black + for Abad than give up a top guy for Miller.

You've seen this young man Schwarber hit a baseball?

I have been savoring every last moment of this glorious season so far but I still feel a pang when I imagine the lineup card with that monster in it.

Unless it's Machado/Harper/Trout, I don't want him going anywhere.

A lot? There are definitely guys beyond those 3, but the list isn't super long, but with no emotional attachment I might have a different story. His ceiling to me is still a 40 HR .900 OPS guy with average defense which should be like 6-7 WAR. My guess is his floor is probably more of a 25 HR .775 OPS 2 win guy. I could be wrong though
