Several lower tier/bench options available. Beltre is the one homerun among hitters, but that would depend upon Texas falling out of the race. Prado, Jay and Reddick would be guys worth asking about.

This team is so good, we won't need help at the deadline.

Agreed. Once Baez replaces Kawasaki, I can honestly say there's not a single spot in the 25-man I would want to use any resources on upgrading.

If they falter or one of the other NL Central teams is hanging annoying close or if there are a run of injuries, sure. But as it stands right now, they project to win the division by 10+ games and the playoffs are still a crapshoot, so there's not really any ROI on trading for MLB talent right now.

I still want another TOR starter for the playoffs on the Gray/Archer/1 of the Indians pitchers type level but I generally agree with you on this.

Agreed. However, if you can get a guy like Carrasco or Gray that has multiple years of control, then it might be worth it, if the price isn't completely exorbitant. That being said, horsefeathers pitchers. So maybe not.

But, yeah, renting a player is a big "NO." There's always the Trevor Cahaill/Fernando Rodney/Austin Jackson August Special if we want to fill out a spot or two, which really would only need to be done in case of injury.

Barring significant injury or multiple players cratering, the trade deadline can be as much about 2017 as 2016, even with higher prices. Hammel is a FA after the season and Lackey will be 38. Wood, Cahill, and Richard are FA with Strop a year behind. Getting multiple years of control of a good reliever is never not necessary, even if the rotation looks good in July.

Would anyone be willing to part with, say, Schwarber for young pitching help?

For Fernandez or Archer, if either became available at the deadline, I probably would. I don't think I would include him for any of the Indians guys or Gray. If he was an absolute requirement for Gray or the Indians guys I'd prefer to look at other routes to see if we could get someone like Odorizzi, Shields or Ross for just prospects.

I was kinda in favor of trading him this past offseason for that very thing (Sonny Gray was my target).

When the Cubs already have 100 wins by the Trade Deadline, MLB will institute an expansion draft-esque redistribution of their players to the rest of the league

For me, it all boils down to where Texas is in the standings later this summer, and what their price tag on Beltre is. If it's not too high, I wouldn't hate having him at 3B.

Everything else out there is a bench option, IMO. Reddick wouldn't be a bad guy to have on the roster, though he hasn't played LF in a couple of seasons. But he gives you a solid veteran option for RF when you want to give Fowler or Heyward a day off.

I've been wanting Gray as a main target for a while but never really looked at his numbers until recently, does the fact that he hasn't K'd more than 7.5 per 9 over the past 3 years scare anyone? If we are giving up some of our best trade chips for a pitcher I'd like to see us get someone with more knockout stuff.

Yeah, Gray isn't my first choice, for that reason. Carrasco is at the top of my list.

And I saw someone else mention Chris Archer and Jose Fernandez. I forgot to originally include them, as I don't see them being traded. But, if they were, it goes: 1. Archer 2. Carrasco 3. Fernandez 4. Gray. If not, then I'm out on any big deals.

I like Fernandez more than Carrasco, but factoring in years of control, I lean Carrasco.

What about Strasburg. His K's are down (small sample size yadda yadda) but he has looked pretty solid this year so far. Especially if Wash continues to baby his pitch count and innings.

Washington is going to kick the crap out of the Mets this year. He won't be available until after the season.

Something really weird would have to happen for Washington not to at least be within a couple games of a WC spot come the deadline, he's not gonna be available. I def hope we target him in FA

Welp, damn. Pitching it is, I suppose.

Still plenty of bench options out there, and not at all bad guys to have. Reddick would be nice to have. Martin Prado would be another guy I wouldn't hate on the roster. Decent enough with the stick and pretty good defensively at 3B. I just don't see any real obvious upgrades available at positions of "need."

The Mets have scored the 2nd fewest runs in MLB. Maybe it's worth asking about an arm there?
