Glasnow can't throw strikes and Taillon hasn't pitched in over 30 months. I'm more worried about Searage making Nicasio and Niese into 3 win starters. One of the youngsters will probably be better than Locke though, it's amazing he's held a rotation spot so long on a playoff team despite being a homeless man's Travis Wood.

I'm holding out hope that these early returns from the pirate's starters are less a product of inherent ability and coaching acumen than a reflection of the true awfulness of the cardinals' offense.

glasnow "only" walked 3.5 batters per 9 innings last year. and if there's a guy who can survive with an elevated walk rate, it's him. he's only allowed 18 home runs as a minor leaguer and 5.3 hits per 9 innings.

the bullpen will see a lot of work when he pitches, though, since he'll reach his pitch limit by the 5th or 6th inning.

I'm a bit skeptical even of the improvement, since it was only in 60 AA innings and his control regressed again in AAA(12.6% BB%, his worst since rookie ball). He's still very talented and could definitely put things together, but in terms of things that are existential threats to the Cubs, a poor man's Aaron Sanchez waiting in AAA doesn't worry me a ton.

I saw some of the Cardinals fans on GRB talking about how they looked like a third-place team, but I'm not sure that's right. This Pirates team doesn't look too intimidating to me. Maybe I'm wrong. And I know they are a good bet to over-perform, thanks to Searage and the pitching-inside philosophy. They're a tough team to read. The outfield is, obviously, fantastic. But, the line-up, as a whole, has never really scared me. Liriano looks like horsefeathers right now. And I just don't believe Searage is enough of a wizard to make something out of Niese and Nicasio. I think the Cards might be considerably better. I might eat my words later on, though.

Pittsburgh is going to be really scary when Taillon and Glasnow get promoted.

Glasnow might be the goods but the injuries took their toll on Taillon.

They popped up in a Hamels rumor last summer so I wouldn't rule out the Pirates trading for a SP.

Taillon has been phenomenal early on this season like top-10 prospect good, so the injuries took their toll take is probably bad.

If you haven't seen Glasnow in person and you have the chance, do it. The kid is fun to watch and the stuff is virtually unhittable.

they're going into tank mode again

they are so far ahead of us in the rebuilding process that they are starting the next rebuild already

Houston has a lot more left on the farm than we do. Martes should be a top 25 arm by mid year, Bregman is destroying AA, Reed is starting to recover from a slow start, but unquestionably remains the best 1B prospect in the minors. They'll have their choices of Michael Feliz, Francis Martes and Joe Musgrove for the rotation next year. 2017 and going forward they'll be a vastly improved team.

That's neat. They also have Scott Feldman and the ghost of Doug Fister in their horrible rotation right now. And their hitters are striking out more than any other team in the league. That's cute that they have some top-50 prospects, though.

Regardless of what Tallion ends up becoming, the Pirates picked him over Machado, which made me wonder "what if"... Could you imagine Pittsburgh with Machado or Houston with Bryant?

Houston with Bryant is a scary thought. Reed-Altuve-Correia-Bryant across your infield? Lol.

hanging out with some pirates and mets fans last night I mentioned to the pirates fan that he's got to be feeling pretty good about getting that wild card spot again and they all pretty much agree the divisional race is over.

I enjoyed it.

He wasn't a very bright fan then.
