ESPNs body issue: because you weren't insecure about your body already.

Also, when did Jake get time to go pitch naked in the middle of a desert? Arizona series?

Jake's really come down to earth in the month of June. I know that Down to Earth Jake has a 2.35 era/1.26 WHiP and 11/32 BB/K over 23 IP, but still, making professional hitters look like little leaguers is more fun.

The biggest issue for me is that he's not going deep in games anymore. 4 out of his last 11 starts have only gone 5IP and only once during that stretch has he exceeded 7IP. I'd also like to know why he's using his FB 12.5% more this year while reducing the usage of his cutter, curve and change. His velocity is down off a spike year and with the reduction of off speed pitches, I wonder if his arm isn't a little achy.

It's more complex than this, but teams have stopped swinging. They know that his command hasn't been pinpoint like it was last August, but they also know the stuff is still insanely hard to hit. So if they get ahead in the count they shrink their zones to nothing and hope that he doesn't fool them or he can throw 3 balls before he throws 3 strikes.

Arrieta is in about the same number of 1-0 counts as last year, ~40% of total PA.

2015 after 1-0: 345 PA, .188/.257/.287, 8% BB%

2016 after 1-0: 153 PA, .206/.346/.310, 16% BB%

This is also more complex than just this, but, according to PITCHf/x, here are the percentages of pitches Arrieta's thrown in the strike zone in each of the last three years:

2014: 47.0%

2015: 47.9%

2016: 47.1%

Hitters are actually making even less contact than they were against him last year, too. He just needs to adjust his game plan according to how hitters are now approaching him, as he talked about in the post-game.

As a pitcher, Jake currently has a 2.9 WAR; as a hitter, a 0.7 WAR. I can't tell if this is a stupid question or not, but would this make him a 3.6 WAR player, or is it not quite so simple?

+defense?

That's just it- per BBR, all pitchers seem defaulted with a 0.0 WAR, suggesting that they don't factor in the pitcher as a defensive position, which he becomes the moment the ball leaves his hand. Unless they lump it in with his WAR as a pitcher.

Anyone notice any similarities between recent Jake and 2015 playoffs Jake?

The Pirates did not.

I'm referring to how Jake looked in both Cardinals and Mets series
