Usually I cringe a little when I hear the phrase "pitch to contact." With most pitch-to-contact guys, they aren't actually trying to pitch to contact. Really, they just don't have the type of stuff to miss bats. So, sorry, buddy, but you aren't trying to pitch to contact, you just have no other option. What you are actually trying to do is avoid hard contact, by not leaving the ball in dangerous spots.

With Arrieta I'm totally cool with him when he says he is trying to pitch to contact, because, surprise, he's also better at that than anyone else, too. So, when he says after a no-hitter that he was trying to pitch to contact, I believe him. All you have to do is look at the fact that he threw more fastballs in that game than in any other of his games as a Cub. This might be due, partly, to him having an elevated pitch count and wanting to be able to advance deeper into the game.

But this dude seriously was trying to pitch to contact in a freaking no-hitter. I would imagine most other guys are trying to strike everyone out when they have a no-no going on. "Why leave it to chance? I'll handle this myself." Arrieta has so much confidence that he is going to get guys out that he's willingly letting them put the ball in play during a no-hitter. With some pitchers, they might not have much choice in the matter. But, he clearly has the ability to punch guys out. And, yet, he has enough confidence in his stuff that he is pitching to contact, simply so that he can finish off his no-no while exuding less energy. That's nuts.

Worst end of reasonable is that it is a signal he is coming out of his God phase and will merely be great going forward.

They showed him picking at his fingers in the dugout after the Nats start. We know he had a blister earlier in the season. I wonder if he's still having some kind of issue with a finger, where he's not getting the grip he wants.

I'm guessing there's nothing overly wrong, but even if he has some lingering blister problem or something similar they should just skip a start for him with the start we've gotten out to and just let Cahill/Richard/Wood do a piggy back start.

Should've just got vaccinated.

Although to be fair to Jay, I imagine he just rolls his eyes at half the things she does.

Other than the occasional jog, I don't really work out anymore. But, the "slam the medicine ball on the floor" then "fling the damn thing behind your head" workout seems like it could be fun.

On a Cubs article reading binge today. This is a good one analyzing Jake's last 9 starts vs. his starts in 2014-2015, even if you don't necessarily agree that 'something is wrong' with Jake Arrieta. Biggest conclusions are: 1) He's attacking lower in the zone more often, 2) He's using his fastball more and his slider less, 3) his release point on all of his pitches has been noticeably higher than 2014 and 2015.

I enjoy that Arrieta is at least a little surly.

Agree completely. But who the hell is Lana Berry?
