if they win a world series before it happens I would not have the slightest cringe if they sign him to a 7 year deal.

if they get an insane TV deal, i couldn't care less, world series or not. if they don't, let him ride out his cheap years and goodbye.

If we go Dodgers with the payroll, then I would love to keep him around.

I kinda wanted to sign him to an extension early on last year -- even though it would have been silly such a long time before he hit free agency -- because I thought we might be able to get decent value out of it. But, now, he is so horsefeathering good that there is no deal to be had. The man is getting paid. But, also, he is so horsefeathering good that it would be awesome to keep him around, damn the cost. 7 years is so risky, though.

I don't know what to think. And I haven't ever been certain with this situation. Pitchers are too weird for me to understand. Either way, I am just going to enjoy him while we have him. And whatever happens from there happens.

Greinke's deal + inflation is basically the benchmark as long as he doesn't fall off dramatically or get hurt. I'm not diametrically opposed to putting 6/225 in front of Jake myself, but predicting the Cubs' payroll situation and the free agent market 18 months in advance isn't an easy target.

I haven't been keeping up *too* much but the bubble's kinda popping on these team tv deals right? Like a few years ago it looked like the Cubs could get hundreds of millions to billions for something like that once the WGN deal wore off, but now, its not looking like it right?

They're planning to start their own network, and if the business guys are as smart as the baseball guys, they'll figure out a way to make it work financially even if the cable thing goes to hell.

Who did use that bonus money on? Eloy Jimenez?

Was that the year when they blew past their slot money even with the bonus? so people were questioning why even bother with it?

Nobody in particular, really. The Cubs miscalculated the value of those bonus slots basically (that, or PTR really was as PTR as we joked). It amounted to some savings off the penalty and nothing more. Think that was the same year they traded Torreyes for bonus money.

My thought was that they were hedging their bets for if they didn't get Jimenez, it would help prevent them from going too far over, maybe even prevent getting penalized the next year. Basically, getting Jimenez was going to blow their pool away totally no matter what, with no way to get enough slot money to cover. But if they didn't get him, they may have been able to get enough slot money to prevent some of the penalties. They got Jimenez, so it didn't matter in the end.

hey, i think i was the first hero to champion it!

and we learn that Samardzija posted here:

"You don't trade Feldman for lottery tickets"

What a [expletive] shock you weirdo. I was wrong on Arrieta, I forgot your Bill James self had him becoming Cy Young

when you're that wrong we just get to make fun of you for being one of the more vocally wrong people.

just like i get to have robot jokes made on 50% of my posts for, uh, reasons

The funny thing is his weird obsessive grudge started because I made a joke about Arismendy Alcantara being at the top of his prospect list alphabetically, (and maybe because of his manlove for Porcello?)

ETA: Maybe because I was wrong about Michigan's recruiting class too?

I think I was actually on vacation, but I definitely remember thinking it was dumb when people like Truffle were harping on Shark for his comments on the trade. Plus it was one of the rare cases where I knew the scrapheap players coming back because my diehard Orioles fan friend HAAAAAATED Arrieta

I'm so relieved I didn't post in that thread.

I'm incredibly fortunate that I was still a lurker back then, because I would have made some posts that would look really bad in hindsight. Wait... I mean, yeah, I was always a fan of that trade. I've been Team Arrieta from Day 1.

He's actually a big fan of the redemption story aspect of the whole thing, but man, does he hate that trade.
