To be fair I do think they did far more than us to address their future needs at the trade deadline during their WS run, if that makes sense. Then they added another high ceiling arm in the off-season.

We still went into our reigning champs season with Lackey in the rotation, the Brett Butler amalgam, a rental closer, and a punch and Judy OB threat in CF replacing a stud OB threat who could actually rack up XBH and provide a much more noticeable impact atop the lineup.

We turned around the season before the break but we came out lethargic and the majority of fans were rightfully disappointed in the team during the first 3 months. We lost 10 more games. Spin it any way you want but none of us expected to win 92 games.

I like living in a world where a Cubs season with 90 wins, a division title, and a League Championship Series appearance is considered a disappointment.

Not to sound like a dick, but right now if the Cubs reach the League Championship Series and face anyone besides the Dodgers and bow out I'll be disappointed.

If we make it there and face like the Diamondbacks we should advance to the World Series, and I'd be damn disappointed if we didn't...

ZiPS says Dallas Keuchel would make quite the 5th starter for the Cubs.

If he has another year this year like the last 2 where he can only go 140-160 innings and has those minor injuries, at 31, I could see him being in the Jake/Cobb boat next offseason wanting a 9 figure deal for 5+ years and nobody willing to give it.

That's dumb and that's not how the MLB playoffs work. And obviously anybody here is going to be disappointed if the Cubs are eliminated.

It's hardly crazy to think a season ultimately turned out well AND was, at least at times/in certain ways, a disappointment.

You can be disappointed in the outcome, but that doesn't classify the team as a disappointment. Those are entirely unfair and unrealistic expectations. It's ok to have them as a fan, but they don't define the team.

Well, I disagree. I'm not always disappointed when the Cubs get eliminated. Sometimes they aren't the best team and the other team deserves to move on. The Cubs were a pretty flawed team last year and I think the Dodgers were the better team.

I'm talking about scenarios and not necessarily how the MLB playoffs work in general. Yes, I know they are a crapshoot, and that luck and SSS plays a huge part in the playoffs.

If you weren't disappointed when the Cubs were 4 (well, ultimately 3) wins away from another world series berth and failed to advance, that also makes you a horsefeathering weirdo.

Hahaha, I wouldn't mind if the Cubs had made the WS obviously, but in my mind the Dodgers and Astros were both better than the Cubs last year and deserved to win the WS. In 2016, no question the Cubs were the best team in MLB, and who deserved to win the WS. Maybe I'm focusing too much on meritocracy, but I like to be somewhat objective.

Don't get me wrong -- if the Cubs won the WS last year I'd be super happy about it, but I wouldn't say we were the best team. I wasn't that disappointed when we got eliminated. It was a pretty shitty series against the Dodgers...

For each person? Sure it does; it's a relative a disappointment. Nobody is saying, "the team sucked," but relative to my hopes/expectations as to how the season would go I was disappointed. The first half was frustrating and the playoffs mostly were not enjoyable to me, especially (obviously) with how it ended. Again, doesn't mean anyone is saying they were a bad team, so don't worry. As pointed out, it's awesome that THIS is the kind of thing people can be disappointed over.

winning a world series was always the thing, but the impressive thing about theo's run is how quickly he completely flipped the expectations for the organization.

Yeah, exactly; being disappointed with last year is like being disappointed that that, I don't know, the delicious free pizza delivered right to your door took 45 minutes instead of 30.

And horsefeathers yeah I made this horsefeathers about pizza. PIZZA IS EVERYTHING.
