Agreed. Let Monty make another start even if Lester is coming back. I read somewhere the Cubs were considering going to a 6-man rotation at some point. Can't remember where I saw it or if ti was just speculation.

We have 10 games until our next scheduled off day and then another scheduled off day 6 games after that. So if we let Monty go one more time and then bring Lester back, with those off days, I think that would roughly give everyone an extra day off between starts the next 2-3 times through the rotation going forward before the last stretch of games in September/October. My math may be slightly off but think it's roughly right.

Imagine if Dillon Maples is getting big high leverage outs for us in a playoff game in 2017.

(i think you have to have been following the minors at all for the past 4 or 5 years to get what i'm saying here)

yes, it would be an amazing run for him in a single year.

With Happ dong in the 17 run barrage against Pittsburgh, the Cubs just tied the NL record for most players with 20 hrs with 6.

Rizzo

Bryant

Schwarberer

Contreras

Baez

Happ.

Less exciting because the Cards and Nats did it last year, but still cool.

What's more fun is that we can realistically have 7 next year if you add Russell into that mix.

...which Russell?

If Russell hadn't gotten hurt I believe we would have had 6 under 25 with 20 and that's a record that would be nearly impossible to break. As more teams try to replicate the Cubs Way and if the HR keep exploding league wide something tells me within the next few years there will be another team with 5.

Looks like this is happening, good to get everyone (not just Lester) a little extra rest.

I don't even consider it extra rest. They are in the middle of their longest stretch of the year without an off day (20). This is just Joe fixing what the schedule makers screwed up. Add that its the time of year where team could very likely be making up postponed games, and its kinda ridiculous. Its just serendipitous that its Lester instead of random AAA call up.

Maybe this has come up in the Minors part of the board, but horsefeathers it:

Iowa Cubs catcher Taylor Davis has an innate talent for finding the cameras and staring into the lens until it becomes uncomfortable, so the team celebrated that skill with a two-minute compilation.

And he used to be rocking this look:

How isn't this extra rest? It's the literal definition of extra rest, they are getting an extra 1-2 days off between starts.

pretty sure he means it's not "extra" per se because they should've gotten it in the first place if the schedule makers hadn't "screwed up"

When was the last Friday night, non playoff, game in Wrigley? I would assume the bump is to accommodate ESPN or MLBN for a national broadcast

I eagerly await the rationale behind the Brewers being upset a Friday day game is moved to be a night game. I'm sure it will be reasoned and nuanced and not at all like the ridiculous mewling they did about the rainout earlier this year.

They are pissed off about losing a scheduling advantage, plain and simple. The Brewers have the day before off while the Cubs have a night game in Pittsburgh.
