If the Cubs go 15-14 to end the season, it means the Cardinals need to play at a 110 win pace to tie and 116 win pace to win the division.

The Cardinals are closer to 5th in the wild card race than they are to the division lead.

The Cardinals have played at a 126 win pace in August and gained 3 games on the Cubs.

Yes the Cardinals will probably not win the division but it could get uncomfortably close with the long road trip against .500 and above teams and the back end of 23 in a row while the Cardinals play the Reds, Tigers, Nationals and Pirates.

But once this road trip is over, 16 of the Cubs final 19 games will be played in Chicago so we should be able to put them away before the final series.

And the Cubs should have run away with it while the opposite when the Cubs had the easy stretch and the Cardinals and Brewers had the tougher stretches. Baseball is baseball like that; what's more likely is the Cardinals' pace slows down despite them playing "easier" teams. It can't be overstated how they essentially have to keep winning like maniacs AND the Cubs have to really play flat or worse for the division to really be an issue.

This is very much like 2015 where the Cubs played out of their mind down the stretch and flirted with winning the division for a little bit, but ultimately ended up with a wild card spot.... let's hope the similarities end there.

Very much this. The Cubs have 29 games left, if they go 14-15, the Cards need to go 18-10 (104 win pace) and/or the Brewers need to go 18-9 (108 win pace) to match. Crazy things can happen in one month of baseball (I think the Rockies in '07 won like 22/25 or something to end the year) but at this point the Cubs not winning the division would only happen because the Cubs played like crap.

The most illuminating footage of the fight was captured on a two-minute cellphone video taken by a cab driver. Though Martinez told police he didn’t hit anyone, the video shows him rushing toward a crowd of about a dozen people gathered near a barbecue stand and appearing to throw at least one punch before bouncers push him back. It’s unclear whether he landed his punch.

Classy organization =D>

I can't wait for some Cards fan to respond with "Fake News".

Is Matheny still managing?

They had a good month, which led to them taking the interim off of his title. I'm betting they're stuck now with Matheny 2.0, all due to an ill-timed hot streak.

To my untrained eye it seems the Cardinals have the toughest remaining schedule of the teams in the Central. They still have the Dodgers, Braves, Brewers and Cubs.

According to BP:

Stl: .531

Chi: .499

Mil: .482

Other NL Contenders:

Col: .550 (12 games vs. Ari and LA plus 4 vs Philly)

Ari: .549 (10 games vs. Col and LA plus 2 vs Atl, 3 vs Cubs and 3 vs Houston

Phi: .510 (7 games vs Atl and 4 vs Col)

Atl: .509 (7 vs. Phi, 3 vs. Stl and 2 vs Ari)

LAD: .490

There's really no reason Milwaukee shouldn't at least get a WC spot. They've got 6 games against good teams (us and St. Louis) and 14 against teams that are under .500 (though the Pittsburgh games could switch). Meanwhile, the Rockies/DBacks/Dodgers will all cannibalize themselves and Philly is 5 back with 22 games to go, and they'd pass Atlanta first.

So as long as the Brewers play .500ish ball (10-10 or 9-11), they should be fine. Even 8-12 would get them to 88 and that could be enough for the second wild card.

that Bob Gibson stuff needs to die. here’s a list of pitchers who hit more guys: Jamie Moyer, Chan Ho Park, Frank Tanana, Kenny Rogers, Orel Hershiser, Darryl Kile, Bronson Arroyo. a real murderers row there. there are 5 guys this season alone who hit more batters than Gibson hit in any one season

Just for fun:

The Cardinals are 9-10 since taking the interim tag off of Schildt.

Not-so-coincidentally:

Carpenter during this 9-10 run: .772 OPS

That's definitely a more apt correlation. He was carrying the entire offense with a few kick ins from others here and there and it made them look a lot better than they were. Martinez has gone ice cold as well.

Also, the first game of this 19 game run Carpenter went 4 for 5. If you count the last 18 games, his OPS is .651. One single game adds 121 points of OPS to that total. And for even more arbitrary end points, for the month of September his OPS is .559

Good luck getting that MVP now, Carp.
