Man, the Cardinals are just so bad. They suck. Their offense sucks. They have the worst defense in the league. Their bullpen sucks. Their rotation is really meh and is going to suck once a couple of their oft-injured starters become re-injured. They just suck. They might lose 90 games this year.

And they are in a bad spot looking forward. They owe $369 million in future obligations through 2022. (We owe $253 million -- though obviously we're gonna be forking over some serious cash in arbitration that's not in there.) But, their roster is completely inflexible and they owe a bunch of money to a bunch of shitty old players. In 2020, they are going to be paying Mike Leake, Dexter, Yadi, Brett Cecil, and Kolten Wong a combined $69 million.

But yeah they suck and are in a sucky spot. Carpenter and Martinez are the only guys they could get real value for in a trade too if they tried to blow it up.

And all of this completely ignores Mike Matheny, who IMO consistently plays the wrong players because they're "his guys".

Wait, that article only has a time on it...not a date...is that from today? That seems like an awfully delusional piece to write at the moment.

Delusional was the exact word that came to mind as I was reading it.

But But the Cardinals have 11 World Series titles!

So, in retrospect, the end of their run as a great team in this incarnation is going to have been their playoff loss to the Cubs in 2015.

Nice.

When Jason Heyward left St. Louis to join the Cubs after the 2015 season, he angered some Cardinals fans by saying he felt Chicago’s emerging core would give them an edge against what he implied was an aging Cardinals roster. That looks less true today than it did then

Hmm... I didn't know Sean Spicer moved to writing for ESPN.
