David Ross is an automatic out. I wouldn't bring him up as a solution to any problem. And just because the lineup has depth doesn't mean a potential problem area shouldn't be discussed. That's lazy thinking and not something intelligent people do. Possible issues, no matter the importance, shouldn't be ignored.

the Steamer projections that have us at something like 94-95 wins have the following in mind for montero

.244/.333/.379 good for 1.9 WAR

zips has him good for .232/.325/.358 for 2.0 WAR

safe to say the fate of our season doesn't rest in his hands

if he gets hurt, someone else will play and if they do absolutely terribly, they might cost us a couple of games, while all the other really good players on the team handle things

what exactly do you want for an answer?

with that one post, i've now spent way more time discussing this than this subject deserves. so like the opposite of your intent, i guess.

If this is a long way of saying David Ross shouldn't be on the roster, great, you're the first person who has ever had that thought. But he's the backup catcher. Yes, he sucks. So does pretty much every other backup catcher. If every team in baseball has the same 'problem', is it really a problem? And like others have said, you could make the argument that our starting catcher going down probably affects us less than most other teams, given that we aren't relying on him for much offense at all and have multiple options who can fill the spot.

somebody should call theo once we're done intelligently discussing this and let him know once we have a solution for this potential problem.

Even if David Ross had to catch all 162 games, our offense would still probably be the one of the best in the majors. I don't care about David Ross having to fill in in the event of an injury when the other 7 hitters in the lineup are going to put up solid plate appearances.

Ahh...hell. Let's say that Montero goes down and Ross gets hurt and the Cubs decide that Schwarber is too rough behind the plate and Contreras misfires adjusting to AAA, let alone mlb. What happens then?!?

- Well, we have a 26 year old catcher who has basically torn up the minor leagues since reaching AA in 2014 (Taylor Davis). Seriously, check out his stats.

- We signed Federowicz who would be a potentially non-embarrassing option as he has major league experience.

If they get hurt, too, we would just trade from our deep system for a cheap rent-a-catcher until someone inevitably returns.

Meanwhile, we'd still have seven other people in the lineup that mash.

There's your list of backup catchers from last year's playoff teams. Every good team has awful backup catchers. This isn't worth spending any time worrying about

This is easily the worst StylesClash crusade yet. Who gives a horsefeathers if Montero goes down? If everyone else is healthy, I'll go catch for them. I'm about to turn 42, have horsefeathers knees, and my throwing shoulder is barely attached. I'll split my playoff share with you.

A meme reply is impressive. Your moderator position was clearly given to the right person. Hopefully someday you can write for the tribune or sun times. The intelligence you bring to the table is wasted here.

you think writing for the sun-times is a progression from being given authority to shut down idiots on a message board?

Wait, brandon used to write for the Sun Times.

He must've been hurt, because he had the 2nd most PAs

Is that a question, or do you know something I dont?

Victor Caratini will be a star if Montero and Ross go down. People will be like, "who the horsefeathers is he and where the horsefeathers did he come from?"

Learn his name. Say his name.

The Cubs would handle it exactly the same way they did last year when Montero got hurt. Ross would be the primary catcher and Schwarber would spot start.

I felt like two sentences on the subject was sufficient considering both the minimal impact and the exact same scenario already happened last year and yet here we are two pages later.

So to change the subject, predict the rank of the following nine Cubs hitters by overall offense (say wOBA):

Baez

Bryant

Heyward

Montero

Rizzo

Russell

Schwarber

Soler

Zobrist
