Judge with 61 HR

Second place in the AL is Alvarez/Trout with 37

i was curious, so i looked it up. In 2001 Bonds hit 1.3% of all homers in the major leagues. This year Judge has hit 1.2% of all homers in the major leagues.

Going back to the automated strike zone, I'm generally with Bertz that they should have a light touch to avoid some significant unintended consequences. There's plenty of smart people(Harry Pavlidis is the one who immediately jumps to mind) who are skeptical about our ability to execute on it from a technological standpoint in real time too, so while I don't care about the human element I want to avoid big problems considering the relative lack of testing compared to say, the pitch clock.

However, my issue with the challenge system is I think it becomes more difficult to completely get over the edge to automation when you do have the capability. Challenges in a practical sense are a step between all human and all machine, but in terms of what you need to do to get from all human to all machine in a way that avoids problems, I don't think you "learn" what you need to keep going. You'll have the same questions after the challenge system as you did before.

One other option if they could pull it off technologically, would be to try to introduce real time feedback to umpires on the most objective part of the decision, whether the ball crossed the plate. Imagine a setup where in near real-time the umpire gets a buzzer confirming a pitch crossed the plate. They still make the call on pitch height(which has way more variables due to player heights and crouches), it teaches them to recognize pitches that do cross the plate so (as much as that matters) it could make them better at calling them in case of tech failures, and you've already outsourced the most contentious decision(in my experience on/off the plate is way more common a disagreement than high/low) so the leap to full automation is lower and less impactful.

Shohei Ohtani leads his team in every offensive and pitching category, is worth 4 WAR hitting and 5 WAR pitching overall, and isn't going to get a single MVP vote.

Rough year to put up those numbers when someone else is chasing the Triple Crown

Not just the Triple Crown, but the non-steroid (as far as we know) home run record too.

love getting stuck in baseball reference wormholes:

* wade boggs only had one season in his career with an obp under .350 (.348 at age 40)

* miguel cabrera leads all active players in batting titles with 4

- jose altuve has 3

- dj lemahieu and christian yelich both have 2

- ty cobb holds the record with 12 (!!!), honus wagner and gwynn are 2nd with 8

I wasn't editorializing, but that's obviously why it's getting so much attention and that's how a lot of voters will view it.

Mike Trout missed 43 games this year and still hit 40 home runs.

Really sucks he hasn't been able to stay healthy. He played 157+ games each year from 2013-2016 but has maxed out at 140 in the 5 normal seasons since. Only played in 120 games twice in those five seasons.

This year was the fourth time we've had 4 teams lose 100+ games. Three of those were the last three full seasons (so 2019, 2021 and 2022).

Prior to the 2017 season, there were only 5 seasons where 3 teams won 100+ games in the same season. It's happened each full season since then with two of those (2019 and 2022) where we had 4 100+ win teams. We nearly had a record 5 100-win teams but the Yankees lost their last two games and finished with 99 wins.

I haven’t really gotten that vibe at all. It’s been much more AL/Yankee record being brought up from what I have heard (and I agree with). It’s cool and historic in that right but only meatballs are saying “TRUE HR KING”. I have been pleasantly surprised to have not heard much on that front.

It’s really just the Maris family ringing that bell

It's been quiet, I agree, but I think/suspect that if any of the guys ahead of Judge on the single-season charts were judged to be clean that we wouldn't have seen the level of coverage we did about the feat.

Random Maris spot poll: is it cool or lame that the dude who broke Ruth's record was mostly Just Some Guy outside of, like, 2-3 seasons?

It’s cool because it was the one thing I remembered from a stats class because our vaguely European (maybe French) prof always referred to him as Baby Ruth.

Who was likely all hopped up on something as well.

I don’t know when it happened but isn’t it widely considered just about every player was taking greenies on a somewhat daily basis. There are stories about how most teams just had a candy bowl of them for players to grab. Fairly sure Aaron and others took them (and I’m not saying it’s that “bad” or the same as HGH mind you)
