Reading that article is the first time I've ever seen the viewpoint that hating on disco was considered an afront against African Americans, Hispanics, and Homosexuals. The only people I ever associated with disco was milquetoast white people in leisure suits. I realize a lot of disco-era songs became anthemic for a lot of cultures, but I never thought hating disco was because of that, I just assumed people hated it because it was nails on a chalkboard to them.

Is this a popular viewpoint that I've just been completely oblivious to or is this some old unpopular hot take that's being resurrected in times of heightened sensitivity?

Disco was born from historically black musical genres, and all of the best disco artists were black. I blame Saturday Night Fever and the Bee Gees in general for your viewpoint.

Yeah, there's a pretty good case to be made that there was a LOT of underlying resentment to disco because of the general "scary urban elements" it represented. Similar to the receptions punk and hip-hop got, too. Yeah, there's people who just don't like the music, but there was a HUGE aspect of really fearing/hating The Other involved.

For some reason I thought Steve Dahl died recently. I'm convinced that some 70's-era Chicago shock jock-type made the news when he died some time in the last year.

this. dance music, especially disco, was "music for [expletive]" in the eyes of the public at that time and all the way up until the late 2000s/early 2010s.

there's a deeper conversation about EDM/dubstep (or, at the very least, what america terms "dubstep") masculinizing dance music for heterosexual white dudes that i can get into.

when you type in chicago radio dj the first autofill is mancow and the 2nd is dies, but there is no mancow dies.

Seconded. This book is AWESOME. I just got the digital edition and happily passed the physical copy I had to someone who would appreciate it. One of the best musical histories I've ever read.

Accurate. Was born in 83, Disco was pretty dead by the time I was forming cognitive memories and getting into music myself so I only was ever exposed to it through those exact pop culture references. And the only time I ever saw people on modern shows lamenting the disco era it was white people interacting with other white people about it (i.e. that Freaks and Geeks episode)

Though even that awesome F&G episode touches on the whole social divide aspect. It's not even just that Nick likes a type of music his friends thinks is lame; it's that he loves the dancing part of it and it's something "girly" he genuinely loves and wants to do with his new girlfriend. In an episode all about saying goodbye and/or moving on or discovering new things, it's a nice subtle way of showing how it was a genre that let a lot of people celebrate themselves.

Officials from baseball and the players’ union are expected to begin discussions on economic issues within the next two weeks, according to major-league sources.

These are discussions the union wanted, so the burden is on the players to bring realistic proposals to the table. Still, both sides should be motivated to adjust before the current collective bargaining agreement expires on Dec. 1, 2021.

The union initially sought to address its competitive concerns by proposing draft incentives and service-time adjustments during the offseason. Baseball countered both proposals, but the talks did not advance. The two sides reached agreement on a number of rules changes with the understanding they would discuss broader economic concepts after Opening Day.

Negotiations on economics in the middle of a collective bargaining agreement are virtually unprecedented in nearly a half-century of labor relations in baseball. A series of extensive changes conceivably could result in an extension of the CBA, which obviously would be a plus at a time when labor tension is as high as it has been since the last players’ strike in 1994-95.

Baseball’s willingness to engage in such talks – while an acknowledgment of the players’ frustration with the current system – does not assure the owners would significantly alter a deal they agreed upon 2 1/2 years ago. But some owners also recognize that the large number of non-competitive teams is damaging to the sport.

I was trying to figure out why Fangraphs had Max Muncy, who is having a very good year, as the #1 qualified 1B in the NL based on WAR despite him not being in the Top 3, and in some instances just outside the Top 5, of most of the important offensive categories among all 1B in the NL and I realize he's the only qualified 1B in the NL with a positive defensive rating. With a defensive rating of 1.5, he's 3.7 defensive rating points ahead of the 2nd best 1B, Pete Alonso and Christian Walker who have -2.2 ratings.

Is Muncy really that good at 1B defense, or is this just another case of defensive metrics sucking for 1B?

The defensive metrics suck, especially at 1B. Pete Alonso is a disaster there. They sub him out of games for defense late.

Seriously though I want to know how the Dodgers are so efficient defensively. They have only 3 players with negative dwar and neither of them are that harmful.

They’re second in the Majors with a .266 BABiP against. That’s an awful lot of balls in play finding their way ways into gloves.

It’s looking more and more like Eloy is the real deal. 2 more dongs tonight.

He's got a .303 OBP and a .791 OPS after tonight. Coming into tonight, he's been worth -0.3 bWAR and 0.0 fWAR.

My cousins in London don't care one bit about baseball, but MLB can try to build a market there lol. Maybe try comparing it to cricket? Some still enjoy and follow cricket, but not really the younger generation as far as I can tell.

I'm pretty sure my cousins enjoy the NBA somewhat, but everything comes second to football (soccer) over there. It's bizarre how fixated they are around one sport from an American's perspective.

At age 22, only 170 PA’s, cost controlled, small sample size...

Yeah, plus .313 .421 1.000 in the last week with only a .182(!!!) BAbip, and .294 .368 .647 with a .333 in the last 2 weeks.
