pirates ramping up effort to sign kazmir

Weird, makes the Walker-Niese trade make even less sense. Surprised they aren't going after Kendrick

well they have two rotation spots to fill, right?

Depends on if you count Morton.

They also have Taillon (if ever healthy) and Glasnow.

Maybe? Cole-Liriano-Niese-Locke-Morton then Taillon-Glasnow-Webster waiting in the wings

Ha. I just saw amsinger expressing the opposite sentiment. "Let's talk about Chris Davis...I mean you talk about HEYWARD getting $200M then Davis has to be up there too. This is a real power bat who hits hone runs and drives in runs. "

Maybe not word for word accurate but close enough

I feel like that's an really great package that Klentak got for Giles. If that's the current cost, or close enough, for high end pen arms ... Ugh.

When you consider performance plus control, Giles is possibly the most valuable reliever in baseball. When his name was briefly attached to the Cubs, I figured it'd take on the order of 3 of our top 10 to land him.

He and Dellin Betances are both guys you'd love to have at the end (or near it) of your bullpen. Betances is a little older and gets to arbitration a little quicker, but he'd be a nice arm to have, as well.

saw over on the Rockies site that they are trying to gauge value of all their outfielders. How much do you think it would take to get Blackmon? It would totally be another rental though because hes FA after this year I believe.

Sure, I get it. I mean, there's 4-5 years of control, plus stuff, significantly improved command, and from the Astros perspective, they really don't care about 3-4 years from now - they are focusing on their current window this year and next year. I completely get the cost, but I'd almost rather try plugging in guys rather than shelling that out. Sure, you'll walk into misses on occasion, or maybe a Tommy Hunter type, but you may, on occasion, walk into Zach Britton.

That's a big, big package the Astros gave them. I mean, there's a part of me that likes that package as much as what they got for Cole Hamels. Velasquez has big time stuff and has a chance to be a very good power arm starter. There's some health concerns, but the stuff is that good. Fisher looks like he finally started to tap into his power and still has a chance to be an top power bat. Oberholtzer and Eshelman both have shots as end of the rotation arms. Obviously, the chance of all 4 panning out is slim, but the talent level given up is huge, and Velasquez looks like he has a good shot as a late inning pen arm if his health doesn't hold up.

11:33am: The Padres and Braves are nearing an agreement on the trade, tweets Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports. The two sides are working out final details at this time.

10:49am: The Braves and Padres are discussing a trade that will send catcher Christian Bethancourt to San Diego, reports Joel Sherman of the New York Post (Twitter link). ESPN’s Jayson Stark reported yesterday (Twitter link) that the Padres had interest in acquiring Bethancourt in the wake of Atlanta’s additions of A.J. Pierzynski and Tyler Flowers.

Seems kinda silly to deal Bethancourt because he is "blocked" by two mediocre players. Also, what is that now, like 32 trades between the Braves and Padres in the past year?
