Heyward has always been getting closer to 30 million AAV than 20.

A 4th mystery team is said to now be involved on the Fernandez talks according to Stark.

Other teams think its the Astros.

The Cardinals have a really strong feeling it's the Astros

This is just an amazing post

It is so amazing that I didn't get the reference at first.

It is a nice quote. I don't think anyone is arguing about adding depth. It is how to add that depth that is causing disagreement.

I think it's more "what counts as depth." Trevor Cahill as next man up in your rotation isn't depth, it's the problem you're trying to avoid with depth.

Cahill serving as spot starter or your seventh extended option is absolutely fine as depth. I'd simply much rather add someone that I could stash at AAA than create problems on my major league roster by adding a sixth mlb starter there.

But it was a nice try at a strawman.

it was such a stay-puft sized strawman that i didn't even bother replying

The old "having too many good players" non-problem problem.

Hammel to bullpen. Problem solved.

You sure he'll accept that demotion? You sure many of the options being discussed are actually better options in the rotation than Hammel?

Also, you're changing the argument again. Who is saying we shouldn't add more depth? I'm of the belief that you're better off if you can add depth to the rotation without subtracting from your depth of position players. If you trade Javy, what happens if Soler sucks? What if Castro goes off a cliff again? What if Bryant gets hurt? Admittedly, pitchers get hurt with much more frequency. But Javy (and LaStella) provides your depth at a number of positions (directly or indirectly by taking 3B while Bryant moves to the OF). Those happen to be positions where we have a wide variance of potential outcomes this season.

Heck, I'd rather sign Cliff Lee to a one year deal and keep Javy than trade him for another health question mark like Odorizzi (who has never reached 170 IP in his career).

I'm sure he's an employee of the club and can pitch anywhere we tell him. If the next pitcher we pick up isn't better than Hammel, then that one can go to the pen.

If nobody disagrees, then don't consider it an argument. Just a comment on how I like that quote from Hoyer.

Soler's backup is Coghlan. Castro and Bryant's backups would be LaStella. I'm not the biggest LaStella fan, but I think that's still preferable to the depth we have at SP.

Alright - I like the fact that a smart front office performs risk analysis as part of their planning, as well.

I'd prefer Tim's route of adding depth, like Sierra. He'd fit perfectly. But we don't even know when he's going to be available(I'd have thought by now honestly). The question becomes who else actually qualifies as "depth". If we keep Wood, he's got to be 1 of the 10 best 6th starters around, I'd think.....But we'd want someone else on top of that and not to where the Cahill and Richard's of the world come into play....

Henderson Alvarez would be nice(if he's healthy), but someone's giving him a guaranteed spot if he is and probably a pretty decent contract too. Dillon Gee? Does he count? Masterson's supposedly healthy, if he's a NRI type-I'd love him. Mike Minor falls into the same category, but I've got no idea on his health.

I hate saying it, but I think Yusmeiro Petit would be an awfully nice and cheap 6th starter for us this year and it'd allow us to hold onto Javy and Soler.
