Is there something about Arrieta in terms of delivery or age or something that makes Maddon not worried about having him go over 110+ pitches every start?

I guess so far we haven't seen any signs of the workload affecting him but I'm worried it will at the wrong time.

not that i'm defending the decision, but joe said he's the most well conditioned athlete he's ever been around. he really doesn't look like he ever labors and so i'm sure there is truth behind this mentality, but it doesn't seem like it's necessary.

And Mark Prior had perfect mechanics. This decision was [expletive].

Mark Prior got fucked up by a shitty Achilles, getting clobbered on the basepaths and taking a linedrive off of the elbow. Yeah, Dusty sucked and WAY overused him (in his ROOKIE season; Jake's been around), but the narrative has mutated to the point that people talk like overuse and mismanaging is basically all that destroyed him.

Remember almost exactly seven years ago when we came back from 4-0 bases empty with two outs in the ninth against Milwaukee

Yeah but I'm not worried about him being gassed physically, I'm worried about his arm falling off. Can conditioning prevent that? (Serious question)

No, it can't.

30 year old freakishly studly dude who has next to 0 miles on his arm and has never been injured throwing 120 is a lot different than 23-year-old mark prior out there throwing 130 pitches up 12-0.

I already said I didn't really agree. In fact, in the post you quoted.

That narrative is correct and this is nothing like it. Arrieta isn't a kid nor is he injured.

I don't really see much reason for Arrieta to have pitched the 9th, but let's be factual with comparisons. Aside from the stuff Mojo just mentioned about getting hurt on fluke plays, here's Prior's top pitch counts of 2003:

131

129

20! Give him the Cy Young,

1.65 ERA is really impressive though

So is 1.88 and considering he has an ERA under 1.00 since the middle of June, he definitely has a shot.
