Prospect guys have any thoughts on Pineyro? Elliot Soto is a nothing, but just from surface numbers Pineyro looks like a decent return from Miami's perspective.

We had to start Mark Clark because

-Mullholland was probably pitching the best but he pitched 8 innings his last 2 starts, his last start was Sunday (game 162), and he came on in relief in game 163

-Tapani pitched on the last friday of the season and would have been good to go for game 1 on normal rest but was brought in for an inning of relief in game 163

-Trachsel would have been the next choice but he started game 163

-Wood...I am not sure why he wasn't healthy enough to start game 1 but was able to start game 3. I remember there being a lot of talk about whether he should be shut down for the year or pitch in the playoffs and I don't think it was official that he would start game 3 until the day of the game.

So it was either Mark Clark or Mike [expletive] Morgan

You can squint and see a MLB future for Pineyro, but he's not a serious prospect. They got him for a couple months of Scott Hairston, and his value didn't really appreciate much.

Soto could have been released tomorrow and no one would have blinked.

I wouldn't mind not losing Pinyero, who's not a complete non-prospect, but we would have had to expose him this Winter anyway.

Might be a let down, but Haren throws strikes and gives you an experienced alternative if Lester or Arrieta don't line up for WC game.

lmao at arguello

Remember that time we started Mark Clark in game 1 against Atlanta? (Or maybe we didn't. That's how I remember it and I'm too lazy to look it up).

The '98 Cubs preferred to call him 'our #2 starter'.

Not by 4/12/98.

Call me crazy, but this could hypothetically be a precursor to using Hendricks as part of the mythical 3 team mega-deal.

we were just discussing that...

My thought as well

This or they are worried that Hammel isn't healthy and might end up on the DL soon after all.

Really thought Miami would get a smidge more than that. We lucked out. Hope it's not the only deal, but I'm very OK with this.

i've heard of pineyro. i expected two guys i had never heard of or maybe that sounded vaguely familiar like jeferson mejia or whatever

It's close on results, but I'll give the edge to Clark on FIP. Anyway the point there was Haren the 5th starter by a country mile isn't going to be getting playoff starts no matter what. Mark Clark one of the best non-Wood starters in '98 was always going to be pitching in that postseason.

Everything's so rapid fire, so apologies if this has been addressed....But didn't the Dodgers pay all of Haren's salary in the trade to the Marlins? If so, getting him for no salary makes this seem like a depth move more so than a definitive "he's our 5th guy" type of move anyway....

Yes. They covered the $10 mil contract. Does not cover incentive bonuses though, which are kinda negligible. If he meets all of them he stands to make like $2 million.

EDIT:

performance bonuses: $0.25M each for 24, 27, 30 starts. $0.5M for 32 starts. $0.25M each for 150, 160, 170 innings. $0.5M each for 180, 190 IP

So $3 mil total if he meets them all.

I just wanted to point out that this move officially makes us buyers for the first time in 6 years. :cray: (that's supposed to be a happy cry)

So technically we get to do something fun, but we do it in the most boring, stupid, meaningless way possible while all the other teams get to do it better?

The Epstein Way.
