Anyone else remember the days when if you wanted to track the deadline deals, you had to carefully read the reports scrolling at the bottom of the screen on ESPN?

Nothing will beat the moment when I was watching Baseball Tonight's trade deadline addition when Gammons said that Nomar didn't get traded and then about 2 minutes later it was reported Nomar was traded to the Cubs.

Didn't something similar happen with Maddux?

Yeah I think they even had a graphic up that said that Maddux agreed to sign with the Yankees while they were discussing on Baseball Tonight. I remember all the anger here on NSBB that the stupid evil empire was interfering with our homecoming with Greg.

Edit: In trying to find any online documentation of this, I discovered that Maddux turned down an offer that was $6m more from the Yankees to instead sign with the Braves in 1992. And $6m was a big difference back then (Maddux's deal with Atlanta was 5/$28m)

Haha. I remember I was visiting family and obviously we didn't have smart phones or whatever to check the news, but on the way there I was listening to the Cubs postgame and they said basically that the Cubs were not going to make any moves, so I kind of came to terms with it only to find out like 45 minutes later by my Boston friends texting me about how devistated they were.

In a way I will remember those pre-smart phone moments like that way more vividly than I will remember refreshing my phone constantly for 6 days in a row waiting to see if Jon Lester signed with the Cubs.

Absolutely. I had to go to work at my movie theater job that day and since I had to leave I assumed we weren't getting Nomar. Then two of my friends actually swung by the theater to tell me that we had and assure me Clement wasn't involved (I'd made no secret of the fact that I was against trading Clement for him). That was a great day.

It's almost as if they value winning the world series over their prospect ranking.

Thank you for giving me a brain splitting migraine. I mean I understand what you're trying to say -- but Mike Leake is not the guy that puts you over the top. If they win again it'll be because they still have Bumgarner pitching 3 games in a series and going crazy, not because of Leake. However they may lose quite a few more games in the future because they gave up their #1 guy.

The inability of people to grasp that a move like this isn't about the postseason itself but about solidifying the ability to get there in the first place is mind bottling. Leake may not even pitch in the playoffs, but if he makes 11 starts over the next two months and has a 3.5 ERA vs. the alternative who may have a 4.5 ERA, that's potentially the difference between winning 4 games or 8 games and getting into or not getting into the playoffs.

Well, we can't have people's minds being bottled.

[expletive] people are just taking getting into the playoffs for the next ten years for granite.

gerardo parra to O's for zack davies

That's a really nice deal for Milwaukee. I just don't think this is Baltimore's year, but they are pushing their few chips left in to try and make a push. Davis is a bit under-sized, but has the chance of two plus pitches to go with a decent enough fastball. He's 22 and performing well in AAA ... this is a nice return for a rental OF. The Orioles really, IMO, should've saved Davis to compete for a rotation/pen job next year with other options like Wright/Wilson. I'm not at all convinced that Parra will continue his power, and continue to be so lucky.

@Buster_ESPN

There is some speculation within the industry about a possible BOS/Cubs/Padres three-way blockbuster taking shape. Lots of pieces that fit.

Buckle the [expletive] up everyone. I have no idea what to even expect. Maybe we get Uehara, Venable, and Ross, BOS gets Kimbrel, SD gets prospects?

^ seriously? It's Mike Leake dude. What's your point? Is it that the Giants #1 isn't as good as ours or that Mike Leake is someone I should be upset about the Cubs not acquiring?

lol mike leake can hit!

Anyone up for a game of Boggle™?

I did that on purpose, but if you haven't been here forever you probably missed the reference.

I know the reference. (Checks join dates). It's just not a funny joke. They can't all be winners.

Broxton has been bad but his peripherals indicate he shouldn't be as bad as he has been. That plus the inevitable STL performance bump means that's probably a good acquisition.

It's like you say this every time the Cardinals acquire a new player.

Wait, wait, wait....strike the "like."

Tons of teams have kicked the Cubs' ass repeatedly for a long time because we root for a team that has been garbage for most of our lifetimes and beyond.

It's haaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaack.

but when you can't deny that it's different when your chief rival has been one of the most successful teams in baseball for the past 10 years, it's kind of taxing. Truthfully, I'd rather listen to Cardinals fans, who actually have something to hang their hat on, run their mouth than Brewers fans act as though we share some imaginary , storied rivalry.

Remember in 2008 when they won a playoff game and we didn't?

They've been a much better team for the most part; that's it. As terrible as Bears fans are at least for the most part they seem to get that the Packers are simply a much better run organization as opposed to constantly chalking it up to luck or sorcery or who knows what the [expletive] like Cubs fans constantly do with the Cardinals.

Yes, the Giants' #1 prospect isn't that great. He's a top 75-100 prospect, which is fair value for two month of a #4 starter like Leake.

i don't care how great an organization GB is, there is a huge amount of luck that comes with going like 25 years with brett favre and aaron rodgers at QB

that [expletive] just doesn't happen
