That asking price is nuts for a 2 month rental of David Price.

*3 month rental

August + September = TWO months. They haven't clinched anything and the Giants are .5 game back which could potentially leave them battling for the second Wild Card spot.

they're currently 91% to make it, not factoring adding Alex Wood and Mat Latos and David Price to their rotation and subtracting [file not found]

The Cubs dropped 30% in the last week from a percentage they held for almost the entire season. It's a 2 month rental with the possibility of pitching in the postseason. Unless you have a crystal ball there isn't another answer. :)

So the flipside is that that percentage could go shooting right back up in short order if they started winning more, something trades could very much help them do.

Really hope they don't extend him so the Cubs have a shot in the offseason.

If he does get extended who does that leave this offseason?

Cueto, Gallardo, Kazmir, Kennedy, Lackey, Latos, Samardzija, Zimmerman

Still some good names out there, but a lot less sexy without price

MLB executives are absolutely convinced #Tigers David Price will wind up with the #Dodgers, who likely will have to part with Urias.

I'd be really surprised if the Jays ended up extending Price, especially before he hits the market.

While it is kinda disappointing to see so many big names elsewhere, I can say I'm happy the Cubs didn't beat the prices paid for Hamels and Price so far.

Agreed, I would rather take my chances in the offseason.

Norris and Alford is an overpay (of course twitter might be jumping the gun on the package).

That or maximize the value of the price you're paying and go for a controlled option like Ross.

I'll be super bummed if they don't add at least 2 of 3 of: back-end starter, reliever, bench bat.

I can't see any scenario where Price would bypass a chance at the open market to sign a long term deal in Toronto.

Also, now we don't have to worry about losing a draft pick for signing him, not that it was a huge concern to begin with.

I don't see how the Jays could possibly afford it. Between paying Tulo and having to replace Buehrle and Dickey, they'd have to jump their payroll up 20 or 30M.

Not a huge concern, but you're definitely right that it's worth noting. I think that will be something Theo and Co. take into consideration and probably makes players such as Price and Cueto a bit more attractive to them than the alternatives.

Bob Nightengale of USA Today tweets that the full hall includes Norris, Jairo Labourt, and Matt Boyd for Price.

I'm not familiar with the Jays system, whats that look like for the Cubs prospects?

A part of me is surprised that the Blue Jays were able to make two major deals without really clearing the deck of their top talent. I mean ... they gave up a lot of talent, but really, the only two elite guys were Norris/Hoffman. I really like a lot of the other pieces - Boyd/LaBourt/Tinoco/Castro ... but those guys were close, but not elite yet (one might be able to make a case on Boyd, I guess). That said ... that's a lot to give up for 3 months of Price. I mean, that's a potential TOR arm plus two guys with solid rotation potential. It's a smart move for the Tigers, who needed to rebuild, and this gets them a lot of arm talent.

All this makes me wonder - for all the talk about the weak offenses of this era, teams are still looking hard at pitching prospects at the deadline. Now, granted, few elite positional chips get moved in general, but until our arm talent improves in the upper level, it will be hard to compete on some of these trades for top mid-season targets without giving up elite chips.

Anyhow, I still think we are in a solid spot to push this year without giving up too much for the future. Will be curious what happens today and tomorrow, but even then, there's still August.

Norris an MLB ready top 10-15 prospect in baseball, so Schwarber would be his closest comp. Boyd, at least to me, is a slightly better Pierce Johnson.

We don't have anybody to comp for Norris. Hes cost controlled forever and slides in the Detroit rotation right now as their best pitcher, probably.

So does the Hamels and Price trades put the cost for a guy like Ross out of the cubs radar?

It makes me think it's going to take Javy+Underwood+Eloy which would absolutely suck.
