Do we even have what it takes to put a package together? I'm thinking we might be better off just waiting until the off season so we don't have to trade anything but money.

I don't think I'm comfortable with trading really any of our valuable young guys. Boy, a Price/Cespedes packages would really blow my mind, though.

Did you even see what Detroit gave up for him with an additional year of control?

I actually couldn't remember and had to google it just now. Wow... that makes me a little more optimistic. If we could get Price to agree to an extension that would be sweet.

I agree with waiting until the offseason. It seems likely that he would stay if he was traded here based on his comments, but do you want to risk trading Baez, Edwards and Johnson or something like that when the division title is not super likely, meaning you could play and lose and 1 game playoff then have the Yankees offer Price $250m, and lose him for nothing and not even get draft pick compensation?

If we were neck and neck with the Cardinals, I might consider it more, but there is a ton of risk of partially gutting the system for a 2 month rental that might not even get you into the division series.

Detroit is only 4 games out of the Wild Card...they don't have to trade him and they have the benefit of draft pick compensation if they lose him. I think its likely the Tigers would hold out for more than what the Rays got for him and if they don't get it, just run with Price for the rest of the season and either try to resign him or get compensation picks if he bolts.

While the bottom of the rotation is an experiment, overall the pitching for the cubs has been one of the best in the game this year..

i can see price making that even better which would be amazing, but i dont know if it will be enough.. they need a LF bat or a CF LH to platoon with fowler, the offense is just mediocre... if they can get cespedes too that would be sweet, but lets be honest what would they have to give up for that?

Probably more than Theo/Jed are willing to part with, but who knows maybe they can get the tigers GM drunk and he will agree to a steal deal.

We have enough to trade for just about anyone in baseball if we made anyone/everyone available

Oh, I'm aware that we HAVE the players. Realistically, we could probably put the best package together out of any team in the league. It's just a matter of who we are willing to give up. I wouldn't give up any of our elite prospects for two reasons: One is that we don't have to, because we can easily sign a pitcher in the off season and avoid giving up any players. The other is that this isn't really the year. Next year is the year.

Castro, Baez, Vogelbach, and either Johnson or Edwards for Price and/or a slot. With Price signing an extension.

This was what a friend of mine wants to give up for Price.

You do not give up top tier prospects for the right to pay a pitcher 25-30M a year.

I'm not sure there are any top-tier prospects in that proposal.

We'll see how much there is to these reports of them being in sell mode.

It is definitely a bit odd given their position (and only behind a couple of teams).

i would absolutely not move baez for a rental. he is top tier maybe technically not considered a "prospect' anymore but for all intents and purposes he is a 22yr old with mega huge upside. nope dont trade baez.

I'd trade Baez in a heartbeat for Price if they were reasonably certain they could resign him (i.e. make sure they are in the ballpark for what he wants on his next deal).

We know your thoughts on Baez so I'm not here to argue, but if he was eligible, isn't Baez pretty much a top 6ish prospect in the game right now? I can't imagine the ranking systems putting that much stock into under 2 months of ML AB's that young when he was ranked so highly before.

Obviously high risk, but I think the top tier label would need a little more time before it goes away.

I can. I think he'd still be ranked fairly highly but I can't imagine him being very close to single digits.

BA had him at 7 right before he was promoted and there have been a bajillion big name promotions since then. Just find it hard to fathom when it was pretty predictable he'd struggle badly. But maybe I'm wrong.

It wasn't predictable how much his contact problems would be exploited by major league pitching. Not to the degree that it was. Nobody was predicting that.

I wanna say top 30 and I sorta feel like that's being generous.

Gallo is still considered a top 10-15 prospect for some reason. His contact problems are every bit as worrisome and Baez is a middle infielder.

People are being way too hard on Javy.
