Maybe this will signal the end of their ridiculous competitive balance pick. Should be minimal starting point of punishment
Posted

If the higher ups aren't implicated in any way, it's a slap on the wrist to the org.(prison time for the dumbasses that did it)

If Mozeliak or at least guys higher up the chain know about it, [expletive] the competitive balance pick. The punishment will likely be much worse than that, in my opinion.

It is just setting the stage to blame it all on some poor schmuck far down the totem pole. The higher ups could have known even if there is no paper trail to them. The organization could also have benefited from the information gathered, regardless of who knew how they got it or that they even had it. If Cardinals employees were involved, the punishment should be harsh no matter how high up the employees were in the front office.

Here’s what Luhnow had to say to Sports Illustrated:

One was the implication that the hackers had been able to gain access to the Astros’ database—which is called Ground Control and contains scouting and medical reports and statistical projections, among other data—because he had failed to change his old passwords. “That’s absolutely false,” said Luhnow, who worked as a technology executive before he began his career in baseball. “I absolutely know about password hygiene and best practices. I’m certainly aware of how important passwords are, as well as of the importance of keeping them updated. A lot of my job in baseball, as it was in high tech, is to make sure that intellectual property is protected. I take that seriously and hold myself and those who work for me to a very high standard.”

if it comes to light that several people in the organization were aware of this and it wasn't simply a "Rogue" employee, what do you guys think the penalty from the MLB should be? We can already assume that people will be charged with crimes by the FBI in this case.

"Unequivocally,'' Mozeliak said, "I knew nothing about this."

"I don't know the outcome of this, or where it's going to go," Mozeliak said, "but our hope is that when everything comes to light, people will realize that it wasn't something that was organizational-wide. It shouldn't be something that takes away from any of the success this organization has had."

Sure, John, sure ....

Lifetime ban for anyone involved. I know as Cubs fans we're going to want to see the team punished in a way that impacts competitiveness directly, but that doesn't seem necessary to me.

Anyone directly involved should receive a lifetime ban. Jail time would seem appropriate but it's unlikely IMO. As for the organization, a monetary fine and loss of draft pick(s).

If this has been going on since 2012 and wasn't just a one time thing, it looks worse for them.
