Hannemann homers in his first AA at bat. Just think how unfair it would be to the rest of baseball if he really did turn into Grady Sizemore.

Wasn't it Ellsbury?

Either way, I'm good.

home run in the second game of the double header for al contra. two on the day.

I really hope he can turn into a bench player and not just a AAAA player

Tseng again 92-3; spotting both sides. 4 first pitch strikes. Command projects to be plus. Getting s/m on CB. Consistent delivery. #cubs

If he's consistently sitting 92-93, we ranked him too low.

Agreed. I think I was one of the lower folks on him, because last year, he was 89-93. If he is consistently 92-93 and getting swings and misses on his curveball, then that's a guy who should be far higher and not really in that "Hendricks" mold that he looked to be, coming out of KC.

Arismendy with a triple and a hr

Really glad to see this. AA had an awful start this year at MLB and also AAA. Great for the roster with his versatility if he can hit at all. Dangerous as **** if he can be a Zobrist type.

My feeling on Alcantara coming up was always that I questioned his ability to hit at the pros because, while his K and BB rates are fine, I felt like he got aggressive at times. This makes me wonder if he can succeed with inconsistent playing time. He really needs those consistent 400-500 AB's. If he's a "Zobrist-type" and getting consistent starts ... perhaps. If he's not ... then I wonder. Even if he is a Zobrist type, if he's struggling and having to switch positions, that could wear on him mentally.

I still believe that Alcantara is probably best utilized as trade bait to another team.

Isn't he already too old and disappointing?

It's still fairly easy to use his experience level as opposed to age to explain his results to this point.

Yeah, that was a joke.

For the small-sample moment, Hannemann's season is over .350 BA; over .400 OBP; over .450 slugging; and over .850 OPS. In AA at age 23, and with <160 games of pro experience, it's not like he's so old that he should be written off. If he just stays the same as he was last year, obviously not so promising. But his track record of mediocrity isn't long enough to disprove at least the possibility that he'll be better future than he was last year.

It's early, though. Everybody goes through some streaks both hot and cold; when the hot ones come in April, it's a lot more noticeable and stats-bumping than when they come in July. Presumably he's due to cool off soon. But over these last 9 games, he's 17/39 with only 4 K's. He was a high-K guy during the first 8 games, and he K'd too much for a non-power guy last year. So this is probably a brief and misrepresentative fluke. But, sometimes guys do get better. Maybe some real and sustainable improvement is somewhat real?

Would be really fun if between Clifton, Null, Hannemann, and Contreras, if a couple of their good starts were for real. Null and Clifton seem the more likely, though.

Schwarber is going to test the Cubs' resolve to try him as a catcher, because as a hitter he's as ML-ready as Bryant was a year ago.

I suspect the experiment to make him a full-time catcher ends after this season, and he's the guy we're checking off Xs on the calendar for service time next April. He's a starting LF who can be a third catcher on the roster and a lefty power bat with patience and high contact rate - that's plenty to be excited about.

Nope, he's a catcher. If he were in any other org, then yes, he would be a LF/1B/DH. Thing is, we have a 1B, can't have a DH and most likely will need LF for Bryant. It's in our best interest to make him a catcher.

Got to have good enough pitching to make up for any framing issues, that bat at the C is just too much of an impact.

Bryant seems to be handling 3B just fine.

I'm very slightly concerned about the amount of time he takes to get rid of the ball and the potential for the yips to develop. It's probably irrational, but it's in the back of my mind every time he does that really long pause/wind up to throw it to first.

A lot of those he's merely waiting for Rizzo to get to the bag. Watch any 3B on balls hit right to them.

Watch the replays so many times Rizzo has had to step to the left and catch the ball, his accuracy is pretty shaky.

Not this year, at least for me. Look, I was never huge on Hannemann. Well, I liked him, but I didn't see why he was viewed as substantially better than Szczur other than SNTS (of course, I'm talking about the Szczur before this spring). That said, last year was his first full pro season. Look, if it gets to next year, and he's still scuffling a bit, then his age is a concern on projecting him. But ... his 2nd full pro season? I certainly don't view him as "too old and disappointing" already. He turned 24 today ... which is okay for AA, maybe a tinge on the high side, but okay.

nvm - responded before reading below. i see you meant it as a joke.
