There are still 39 players in camp, 34 of which are on the 40-man and 5 NRIs (Coke, Teagarden, Bryant, Herrera, Russell).

Locks:

OF (3)

Soler, Fowler, Coghlan

IF (4)

Rizzo, Castro, Alcantara, La Stella

C (2)

Montero, Ross

SP (5)

Lester, Arrieta, Hammel, Hendricks, Wood

RP (5)

Rondon, Ramirez, Strop, Motte, Grimm

That's 19 spots. Theoretically, 6 are up for grabs.

Denorfia has a spot if he's healthy, but he might be on the DL for Opening Day. Next in line in the OF should be Sweeney, but I've seen some argument for Szczur. Lake seems to be toast.

You could probably call Baez and Olt locks for two more jobs in the infield right now, but they're still insisting Baez isn't locked in.

We're almost certainly going with a 7-man pen, and Coke seems to be the first choice at lefty. The last spot could conceivably go to Jackson, Britton, Rosscup or Ortiz.

That leaves the 25th spot, which would seem to be a choice between Castillo and a 5th outfielder. I'm pretty sure they'll trade Castillo for whatever rather than pay his salary and reduce roster flexibility just to hold out another few weeks on trading him, but it's still possible.

Why is Szczur a lock over Lake? Similar spring numbers. Lake Ks more but is more versatile (a Maddon plus) as he can play IF and OF, no?

Pretty sure Lakes IF days are long gone. He's a LF who can fake it in CF a bit. But yea I'd say he'd still make it over Szczur

They are both terrible hitters, but Szczur is a better defender and base runner so you can at least conceivably use him in those roles productively.

szczur should make it as a 5th outfielder.

261/315/312 in aaa last year. no thanks.

i think he'd hit okay in the majors (he has pretty good plate discipline so he's not likely to go junior lake in the majors), plus he's a good defender, which they probably could use in late innings since coghlan is atrocious in LF and metrics haven't been all that kind to morgan in CF.

Thought I saw Lake playing 3B in a game or two this spring?

Don't recall that happening but maybe I just missed it.

Thought I saw Will Ferrell playing some 1B this spring, too.

he homered off Greg Holland, your argument is invalid

Lake homered off Wade Davis yesterday. Our laughable youngsters are owning the Royals' shut down relievers.

Roster is almost set at this point, the issue is the last bench spots and what to do with Castillo:

Starters:

Jake Arrieta

Jon Lester

Jason Hammel

Kyle Hendricks

Travis Wood

Relievers:

RH:

Edwin Jackson

Neil Ramirez

Hector Rondon

Pedro Strop

Jason Motte

Justin Grimm

LH:

Phil Coke

Starting 8:

C Miguel Montero

1B Anthony Rizzo

2B Arismendy Alcantara

3B Mike Olt

SS Starlin Castro

LF Chris Coghlan

CF Dexter Fowler

RF Jorge Soler

Bench:

Welington Castillo

David Ross

Chris Denorfia

Tommy La Stella

Ryan Sweeney

As of right now. Denorfia looks like he will start on the DL, which would open up one spot. If not, I've gotta think that Sweeney is on the cutting block for an infielder.

There will be 40-man space, as Britton will have to be waived, also Turner is destined for the 60-day.

Why does it feel impossible to me that Junior Lake still has an option?

I saw Lake at third at least once this spring. Announcers were plugging his SS roots and off the charts arm strength.

Also, from what I can tell, these are the guys still in camp who aren't listed above:

On 40 man:

Drake Britton

Dallas Beeler

Matt Szczur

Brian Schlitter

Zac Rosscup

Junior Lake

Jacob Turner*

Tsuyoshi Wada*

NRIs:

Jonathan Herrera

Taylor Teagarden

Chris Valaika

Adron Chambers

Max Baxter

Gonzalez Germen

Anthony Carter

Francisley Bueno

Daniel Bard

Jorge De Leon

Of the ones on the 40-man, only Britton is out of options and will have to be waived. Schlitter is also probably a DFA candidate at this point. Wada and Turner are DL-bound, Turner to the 60-day.

The only guys here that I think have a chance are Szczur, Lake, and Herrera.

i remember all the reports of his potential as a RP, but i don't think i ever once saw his supposed arm strength really manifest itself in the OF; i was really hoping for a laser show reminiscent of Soriano's first couple seasons here
