Given the flexibility of many of our guys, I think I would have preferred the better bat to bring off the bench. I won't get excited about it either way, though.

I don't know. He'll probably play mostly third base when he comes up (assuming Olt doesn't start out really well), but I think it's kind of telling they're still having him practice LF even without Valbuena here. I don't think he'll be in the infield for long.

That's a pipe dream. He'll be in the OF no later than Russell's call up. Maddon values defense. There's no reason to willingly put a worse alignment out there just to up Bryant's fantasy status.

He played in the OF in college (some center field, even), so it's not as if there's nothing to base this on. His college coach said he could be a great right fielder, potentially gold glove caliber with experience. He's athletic, and though he throws a bit like an infielder, he has a plus arm.

To me, it's about maximizing the long-term roster. It is easier to find OF's who can hit than 3B's. If Bryant can play a good 3B, the roster construction in the future becomes a lot easier. For example, when Colorado throws in the towel this summer, you can go out and add CarGo (if healthy).

 

I understand some are trying to make room for Russell at 3B, but that just isn't a problem at this point. Second base is being held down by LaStella - there's room for Russell in the infield.

As we have more and more money to spend, I want to keep roster flexibility at positions where there will be a plethora of FA options to choose from.

 

btw - imagine the dongs in this lineup if you add Bautista to Bryant, Rizzo, Soler, adjusted Baez. Holy crap.
